
TRINITY, Ala. – After tipping off the Class 4A, Area 13 tournament with a win over East Lawrence on Saturday, the Good Hope Raiders traveled to West Morgan to battle the Rebels for the area title Tuesday night. Good Hope held a 1-point lead at the half, but a big fourth quarter from West Morgan helped the Rebels get past the Raiders 67-51.
Both teams team traded three-pointers to keep the game tied early in the opening period. Gavin Pace drove to the basket and scored, then Tucker Malin got an offensive rebound and put it back in, and Tyler Cone laid it in to give Good Hope a 9-3 lead. West Morgan went on an 8-0 run to grab an 11-9 lead. Malin drained a trey from the left wing to give the Raiders the lead right back at 12-11 with a little over three minutes to go in the first quarter. After a pair of baskets helped the Rebels retake the lead at 15-12, Malin’s third three of the game tied the game up at 15. Jacob Haynes laid it in, then Kye McSwain buried a late three to put Good Hope ahead, 20-15, at the start of the second.
Another trey by Malin extended the Raider lead to 23-17, but West Morgan hit a basket down low on the other end to cut it to 23-20. A rebound and putback by Cone made it 25-20, then Malin’s fifth three of the first half kept it at a five-point game at 28-23. A late basket by Cone gave Good Hope a 30-25 lead, but the Rebels hit a pair of late baskets to trim the deficit to 30-29 at the half.
Each team traded leads to start the third quarter. Pace nailed a trey from the right corner to give the Raiders a 33-31 lead early in the third. A pair of baskets by West Morgan gave them a 35-33 lead. After Haynes hit a pair of driving layups, the Rebels scored the next five points to give them a 40-37 lead. McSwain knocked down a three from the right wing to tie the game up at 42 late in the third. West Morgan scored five straight points to take a 47-42 lead, but Malin banked in a three just before the buzzer to cut it to 47-45 going into the fourth.
Pace buried a three from the left corner to give Good Hope a 48-47 lead, then Malin added a pair of technical free throws to make it a 50-47 game. That’s when the Rebels completely took over the game, as their 20-1 run would give them the 67-51 win over the Raiders.
Malin led the way for Good Hope with 23 points. Pace and McSwain each added eight, while Haynes and Cone each put up six.
Good Hope will travel for its Sub-Regional game on Saturday.
