ADDISON, Ala. — Addison hosted the Meek Tigers for the 1A-Area 14 championship game Tuesday night and were looking for the season sweep. Addison defeated Meek twice during the regular season, but the visiting Tigers had a surprise in store for the hometown Bulldogs this time. Meek came away with a solid and fairly dominating 55-43 win. Both teams will compete in the sub-regional round on Saturday, but the Tigers will host their matchup and Addison will be on the road.

The first period was fairly even on the scoreboard as Meek won 12-10 but everything else belonged to the Tigers. Meek got the loose balls, made the extra pass and in general played with more energy. Meek was led by Parker Ferguson and Ryan Ewing with 4 points each. Ferguson and Bailey Bowling each had 3 rebounds. Addison was led by Brad Willette with 4 points. Jed Wilkins had 4 rebounds.

The second period had Meek take it 15-11 to go into the half with a 27-21 lead. Again, Addison was only down 6 but if felt like a much larger lead. Evan McCay had 7 points and Ferguson had 5 points for the Tigers.  Tiger Jordan Phillips snagged 4 rebounds in the period. Addison’s Elijah Roberts had 5 points.  Wilkins and Scout Flynn chipped in 3 points each.

The second half started off with Meek stretching the lead to 12, at 36-24 with a McCay floater and a Ferguson layup. Addison’s Owen Pratt stopped the mini-Tiger run with a layup of his own to get it back to 36-26 with 2:35 to go in the period.  Addison was able to get it down to eight at 38-30 going into the final period. Conner Lane led Meek with 5 points. Ferguson had 2 rebounds and a blocked shot. Roberts led Addison with 5 points and Willette had 4 boards and a blocked shot.

The fourth period basically had Meek holding serve until the end of the period as Meek scored the final 5 points to stretch the final score.  Addison could get no closer than six, 43-37, at the 3:29 minutes mark.  Three different Bulldogs scored 3 points apiece, with Jed Wilkins scoring his 1,000th career point.  Wilkins also had 3 rebounds to lead the Dawgs.  The Tigers were led by McCay with 8 points as he was totally unguardable in the final period.  Meek closed the game out and captured the Area Championship with a 55-43 win.

Meek Head Coach Bryan Woods,

“We had a couple of good practices leading up to this game and we really focused on denying Jed (Wilkins) and Elijah (Roberts) the ball and keep them off the glass.  They are probably the two best athletes in our area.  Addison is a great team and we really tried to control tempo and keep them from getting second shots.  I thought our team played very well tonight and feel good about moving forward.”

Meek Sophomore Point Guard Evan McCay,

“Can’t give enough credit to Coach Woods.  He really instilled us with confidence about tonight.  He believed in us and told us that if we did what we needed to do we would come away with a win.  I know our last practice and even today, we were very businesslike and we were focused and ready to play.”
