CULLMAN, Ala. – Morris Williams, a lifelong resident and educator, has announced his candidacy for Cullman County Schools superintendent. Williams said he brings a rich blend of local heritage, educational expertise and diverse professional experiences.

Williams said he has deep roots in the community. “I am Morris Williams, a proud lifelong resident of Cullman County. I grew up in the East Point community and graduated from Holly Pond High School,” he said.

Williams has 27 years’ experience as a history teacher at Holly Pond High School and 13 years’ experience teaching at Wallace State Community College. He holds a bachelor’s degree in history, a master’s in educational administration and an education specialist degree (EdS) in social science. In 2009, he became a National Board Certified Teacher, a title he has renewed twice.

Williams has also served as the director of V.A.W. Water Systems and worked as an EMT and firefighter with the Jones Chapel Volunteer Fire Department. He owns and operates a poultry farm. Williams said he believes these experiences provide him with a unique perspective on the operation of both businesses and nonprofit organizations.

He said his decision to run for superintendent was fueled by a commitment to accountability and transparency. Williams expressed concern about the current administration’s responsiveness to issues in local schools, saying, “As your superintendent, I will prioritize community engagement, ensuring accessible communication channels and inclusive board meetings.”

Williams is also critical of what he alleges is the current administration’s lack of transparency, particularly regarding the construction of a sports complex and the attempt to implement a sales tax increase without community input. “My financial conservatism and commitment to transparency will guide fiscal decisions responsibly,” he stated.

He also raised concerns about the development of a unique pay schedule for the superintendent. “This two-pronged pay scale, with a $100,000 difference between myself and the incumbent, adds to the existing salary disparity,” Williams alleged.

His vision for the superintendent’s role, Williams said, is collaborative, working with the school board to formulate policy and guide the system within the budget. He said he envisions an environment in which dissenting voices contribute to well-informed decisions and where teachers feel free to express concerns without fear of retaliation.

Williams highlighted the need for improvement in student proficiency rates and said he is focused on elevating the education system. “In 2023, only 54% of our students scored proficient in reading and math. We need accountability and transparency to make informed decisions,” he asserted. He said he plans to explore expanding vocational programs and enhancing the district’s honors, AP and dual enrollment offerings.

Closing his interview, Williams reflected on his previous run for District 4 Cullman County Commissioner, showcasing what he said is his dedication to public service. “Thank you for considering my vision for Cullman County Schools. I look forward to the opportunity to serve you as your superintendent,” he concluded.

Williams will face incumbent Cullman County Schools Superintendent Dr. Shane Barnette in the 2024 Primary Election, which will take place Tuesday, March 5, 2024.
