Man charged with attempted murder, arson in Berlin house fire

CULLMAN, Ala. – A manhunt that began after a house fire on Dec. 23 ended Tuesday, Jan. 2, around 11 a.m., with the arrest of a man accused of attempted murder.

Christopher Todd Burton, 45, of Cullman, was arrested and charged with attempted murder and first-degree arson in connection to the house fire. He is being held at the Cullman County Detention Center.

The charges stem from a domestic incident and house fire that occurred Saturday, Dec. 23, 2023, on County Road 728 in Berlin.

“We in the District Attorney’s Office have been in constant contact with Cullman County Sheriff’s Office investigators and the state fire marshal since the night of Dec. 23 when this happened,” said Cullman County District Attorney Champ Crocker on Tuesday, Jan. 2. “I commend all of our local law enforcement officers, including the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office, Cullman Police Department and the state fire marshal for working through the holidays to apprehend Mr. Burton.”

Said Cullman County Sheriff Matt Gentry, “I am extremely proud of the continued hard work and dedication shown by our deputies and investigators in regard to this arrest. I would also like to thank DA Champ Crocker and his staff at the District Attorney’s Office for their aid in this process as well. Throughout Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and continuing throughout the New Year holiday, our staff was relentless in tracking down Mr. Burton. Incidents like these truly show the lengths the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office goes to keep the citizens of Cullman County safe. I would like to thank everyone at the sheriff’s office and the District Attorney’s Office for their tremendous efforts.”
