PREP BASKETBALL: Raiders, Lady Raiders take home openers over New Hope

GOOD HOPE, Ala. – The Raiders and Lady Raiders of Good Hope hosted their first home games of the season against New Hope Friday night and both squads opened up their home gym with wins. The Lady Raiders raced past New Hope 79-50 to improve to 2-0 and the Raiders edged the Indians in an 83-80 shootout to remain unbeaten as well.

Good Hope 79 – New Hope 50 (Varsity Girls)

A steal and score by Bailey Tetro gave the Lady Raiders their first points of the game and Ava McSwain knocked down three shots from three-point range to keep Good Hope in front 11-5 later in the first. Ivey Maddox drilled three more triples to extend the lead and the Lady Raiders went into the second quarter leading 24-15.

A three-pointer from Heather Tetro and a pair of Maddox buckets made it a 31-15 game early in the second. Maddox’s fourth three-pointer of the game gave Good Hope a 37-18 lead with two minutes to play in the half and Lexi Marshall scored on a fast break in the final minute of the period to put the Lady Raiders ahead 39-22 at halftime.

After an early basket from Charly Johnson, Bailey Tetro scored nine straight points for Good Hope to make it a 50-24 game. Emma Thompson buried a three to stretch the lead to 56-30 later in the third and Jolee McHan scored the next four points for the Lady Raiders to help build a 61-38 lead going into the final frame.

Another three-pointer from Heather Tetro made it a 64-40 game early in the fourth and after baskets from Maddox and McSwain added to the lead, Good Hope was able to cruise past New Hope the rest of the way and collect a 79-50 win.

Maddox led the Lady Raiders with 29 points in the win, followed by McSwain with 14 and Bailey Tetro with 13.

Good Hope 83 – New Hope 80

The Raiders knocked down 15 three-pointers in their win over New Hope Friday night and they needed every one of them to outpace the Indians. Tyler Cone and K’mal Bell each drained threes to cut New Hope’s lead to 7-6 early in the first and Good Hope continued knocking down threes to keep the game tied at 14. Three-pointers from Cone and Bell each hit another three later in the first to keep the score knotted at 20 and following another triple from Cone in final minute of the period, Jacob Haynes scored with 30 seconds on the clock to give the Raiders a 27-25 lead going into the second.

Tucker Malin hit a jumper and Weston Hancock scored inside to make it a 32-31 game early in the second and after a scoring run from the Indians later in the period, Dakota Overton and Cone each hit three-pointers to end the first half and cut the lead to 46-41 going into the break.

Good Hope kept firing in the second half, starting with back to back three-pointers from Overton that trimmed the lead to 50-47. Baskets by Malin and Cone gave the Raiders a 53-50 lead midway through the third and Cone drained another three on the next possession to make it 56-50. A three-pointer by Bell stretched Good Hope’s lead to seven later in the period and the Raiders went into the fourth quarter leading 67-62.

A Malin basket kept Good Hope in front 69-66 at the start of the fourth but the Indians were able to rally and tie things up at 74. Buckets by Malin and Bell kept the Raiders in front 79-76 with two minutes to play and in the final 32 seconds of the game, Bell knocked down three of his four free throws to secure an 83-80 win for Good Hope.

Bell led the Raiders with 25 points in the win. Cone added 20 and Overton finished with 17.
