PREP VOLLEYBALL: West Point sweeps Russellville on senior night

WEST POINT, Ala. – Thursday night was Senior Night inside Jim Boyd Gymnasium at West Point High School, and the Lady Warriors celebrated the occasion with a 3-0 sweep over Russellville.

West Point got off to a quick start in the first set as Patton Fell started things off with an ace, then Liberty Shadix followed that up with a point to give them a quick 2-0 lead. Later on, a pair of aces from Caitlee Simmons helped the Lady Warriors push their lead to 8-1. Kills by Liberty and Laklin Shadix made it a 12-4 game. West Point continued to add onto the lead, as points by Laklin Shadix, Macie Brown, and Hailee Wheeler, gave them a 20-6 lead. The Lady Warriors ended the set strong, as a kill by Liberty Shadix helped them get the 25-12 win in the first set.

The Lady Warriors got off to a good start in the second set, as an ace from Fell gave them an early 4-1 lead. Aces from Simmons and Charli Aris, plus a point and kill by Liberty Shadix, pushed the West Point lead to 11-4. Russellville made it a 14-9 game later on, but aces from Laklin Shadix and Fell gave the Lady Warriors an 18-10 lead. The Lady Golden Tigers made it a 21-12 game, but West Point finished the set strong. A kill from Laklin Shadix and back-to-back aces from Aris gave West Point the 25-12 win in the second set.

The third set went back-and-forth for most of the contest. Back-to-back points by Laklin Shadix gave the Lady Warriors a 5-4 lead early on in the set. West Point held a slim 8-6 lead, but Russellville ended up tying things up at nine. Three straight points by the Lady Golden Tigers gave them a 12-10 lead, but the Lady Warriors tied things up at 12 on a kill by Sara Owens. Russellville held a slim 15-14 lead, but West Point looked to go on a big run to get the lead right back. They would do just that, as kills by Laklin Shadix, Adrianna Owens, and Simmons, gave them a 20-15 lead. The Lady Warriors got kills from Fell and Liberty Shadix, plus a point by Simmons, to help swell their lead to 23-16. West Point would go on to take the third set, 25-18, to finish off the sweep of Russellville.

West Point will now start preparing for next week’s Cullman County tournament.
