WEST POINT, Ala. — West Point’s MaciJo Simpson is preparing for her junior season as a varsity cheerleader, and she talked about the experience she’s gained in that time. She has gotten the chance to cheer alongside some amazing girls and has soaked up as much as she can from them and from her coach.
“The experience has been great. I’ve made so many new friends and met some of the best people through cheer. I have learned what’s it like to be a part of a team and many other skills,” Simpson said. “Cheering alongside some great girls has been motivational and it teaches you that everyone struggles, but to still have each other’s back and to push through together as a team and for the team. My coach is kind, understanding, and she truly cares about us progressing. She has taught us to never give up on ourselves and keep pushing, even when we don’t think we have any fight left in us.”
MaciJo is really happy with the progress that she made during her time on varsity so far and she’ll continue to work hard in the offseason as she gets ready for next season.
“My performance has improved significantly, from just having tighter motions, to taking the time to go through things, and learning how to do them correctly. I will keep practicing motions and push myself closer to my goals for this season,” she said. “My individual goals for this season are to become a stronger base and a more confident cheerleader. My team goals are to do better than ever before at competitions and to see all of my teammates having fun.”
MaciJo talked about what will make this cheer squad special to watch, her role models growing up, and the best advice that she was ever given.
“I think watching our team have fun together will make us so special to watch,” she said. “I always looked up to the high school cheerleaders when I was little. The best advice I’ve ever received is to be myself and never change for anybody.”
