CULLMAN, Ala. – A Cullman County man, who was convicted of murder in April for the for the Jan. 27, 2021, slaying of his wife, Tammy McClellan of Arkadelphia, has been sentenced to 99 years in prison for the crime. Cullman County Circuit Court Judge Greg Nicholas handed down Thomas Leon McClellan’s sentence on Wednesday, June 28, 2023.

Cullman County District Attorney Champ Crocker said he and his assistant district attorneys asked for the maximum sentence due to Thomas McClellan’s lack of remorse in this case. He said members of the McClellan family were present and delivered victim impact statements on behalf of victim Tammy McClellan.

As The Tribune reported in April 2023:

A Cullman County jury on Thursday, April 20, 2023, convicted Thomas Leon McClellan of murder for the Jan. 27, 2021, slaying of his wife, Tammy McClellan of Arkadelphia.

The four-day trial began Monday, April 17, with Cullman County District Attorney Champ Crocker and Assistant District Attorney Tina Burgett prosecuting the case.

“I would first like thank the jury for their service and all the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office investigators who did a great job preparing this case. The evidence at trial clearly showed the defendant intentionally killed Tammy. Her children and family have my prayers. They came to court every day to show support – and this office supports them,” said Crocker.

As The Tribune reported back in 2021, the shooting occurred at a residence along the 3200 block of County Road 5 south of Arkadelphia. Thomas McClellan was arrested Feb. 27, 2021:

Members of the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), Cullman EMS, the Arkadelphia Volunteer Fire Department, Cold Springs Volunteer Fire Department and Regional Air-Medical Services all responded to the scene of the crime that night.

Cullman County Sheriff Matt Gentry said the next day, “It has been determined that this was a domestic incident which led to an altercation. The altercation escalated and both individuals sustained gunshot wounds. Unfortunately, this resulted in the death of one of the individuals, while the other is being treated in an area hospital.”
