PREP BASEBALL: Vinemont tops Cold Springs on the road 9-7; Saturday scoring recap

BREMEN, Ala. — Vinemont traveled to take on Cold Springs Saturday morning and Vinemont didn’t waste any time getting on the scoreboard first. Hayden Robinson hit a leadoff double and moved to third on a wild pitch. An RBI groundout by Jake Hale gave Vinemont the early 1-0 lead. After Chad Reynolds retired Cold Springs in order in their half, Vinemont put together a big second inning as they quickly loaded the bases with no outs. Rylan McRae scored on a passed ball to make it 2-0, then after a walk and a strikeout, the bases were loaded once again with one out. Robinson hit an RBI single over the second baseman’s head, then Matt Foust added an RBI single of his own to push Vinemont’s lead to 4-0. During the play, an error by Cold Springs allowed Chayce Sandlin and Robinson to cross the plate as their lead quickly swelled to 6-0.

Cold Springs got a two-out rally started in the bottom of the third. Brady Phillips got hit by the pitch, then Brodee Bartlett hit a two-run home run over the left field fence to make it a 6-2 game. Josh Winfrey followed that up with a solo shot over the left field fence on the first pitch to cut it to 6-3. Cold Springs continued to cut into the deficit in the fourth and once again, they got something going with two outs. Cole Bales hit a single to right field, then he stole second. An RBI single by Phillips drove in Bales, then back-to-back Vinemont errors allowed Phillips and Bartlett to score as the game was now tied up at six.

Neither team broke the tie in the fifth, but Vinemont would be the team to get the lead right back in the sixth. Sandlin got hit by the pitch to lead off the inning, then Marsh reached on a bunt single. A throwing error by Cold Springs allowed Sandlin to move up to third, then he would score on a wild pitch to give Vinemont a 7-6 lead. Marsh scored on a passed ball, then a balk saw Jordan Eller to cross the plate as that gave Vinemont a 9-6 lead. Bales led off the Cold Springs sixth with a single to center field, then he later stole second. He moved to third on a fly out, then he would steal home to cut it to 9-7. Cold Springs looked to win the game in their final at-bats. Tucker Philbeck reached on an error to lead off the inning, then moved to second on a ground ball. McRae got a strikeout and a ground out to end the game as Vinemont held on to defeat Cold Springs, 9-7.

Foust led the way for Vinemont (5-3) with two hits and a pair of RBIs. Robinson and Hale each added a hit and an RBI. Ayden Thomason, McRae, Sandlin, and Marsh all collected a hit in the game. For Cold Springs (1-5), Bartlett finished with a pair of hits and two RBIs. Phillips and Winfrey each added a hit and an RBI, while Bales chipped in with a pair of hits.

Vinemont will travel to take on Brewer Monday afternoon.

Cold Springs 10 – Curry 7 (Baseball)

Cold Springs faced off against Curry in their second game of the day. The Yellow Jackets struck first in their opening at-bats as a one-out error, then a single put runners on the corners. A ground ball allowed the runner to move to second on the play, then a two-run single, followed by an RBI single, gave Curry a 3-0 lead after one inning.

It wasn’t until the bottom of the third that Cold Springs got something going offensively with two outs. Cole Bales drew a walk, then moved to second on a passed ball. Brady Phillips lined an RBI single to left field and moved to second on an error. He moved up to third on a passed ball, but a fly out ended the inning as the Eagle deficit was cut to two at 3-1.

Curry loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the fourth and an RBI single made it 4-1. They added a sacrifice fly as that pushed their lead to 5-1. Cold Springs got something cooking in a hurry in their half. Matt Williams drew a one-out walk, then Philbeck reached on an error. Cody Smith reached on an infield single to load the bases. Kaiden Graves drew a walk to bring home a run, then an RBI fielder’s choice by Ethan Nabors made it a 5-3 game. Another walk loaded the bases once again, then Phillips got hit by the pitch to cut it to 5-4. Bartlett reached on a Yellow Jacket error, which allowed Bales and Samuel Turner to cross the plate, and that gave the Eagles a 6-5 lead. Winfrey helped add to their lead as he hit a two-run single to left field to increase the Cold Springs lead to 8-5.

A leadoff single by Curry later led to an RBI single with one out to cut it to 8-6. Later on, a two-out RBI single made it a one-run game in the top of the fifth, but the Eagles would add to their lead in their half as Mason Gable scored on a Yellow Jacket error to make it 9-7. Phillips reached on a dropped third strike with one out in the sixth and would later score on an RBI single by Williams to stretch the Cold Springs lead to 10-7; the Eagles wouldn’t let Curry get any closer after that as Winfrey tagged out the runner at second to end the game and Cold Springs ended up knocking off Curry, 10-7.

Winfrey led the way for Cold Springs (2-5) with a hit and two RBIs. Phillips and Williams each added a hit and an RBI, while Bales and Smith each chipped in with a hit of their own.

Cold Springs will travel to take on Carbon Hill Monday.

Etowah 2 – Cullman 1 (Softball)

Etowah got on the scoreboard first as a leadoff single and a double quickly turned into a sacrifice fly for the Lady Blue Devils as they took the early 1-0 lead in their opening at-bats. In the second inning, Etowah added to their lead as they hit a leadoff single, then they took advantage of a Lady Bearcat error in their next at-bat as an RBI single gave them a 2-0 lead. It quickly turned into a pitcher’s duel in this one as neither team could get anything going offensively. Cullman got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning. Haley Graham hit a one-out double, then one out later, Haley Shannon hit an RBI single to cut it to 2-1. The Lady Bearcats, though, weren’t able to get much going after that as Etowah would go on to win their game over Cullman, 2-1.

Shannon (RBI), Emma Claire Wilson, and Graham got the only hits of the game for Cullman (3-4). Wilson went the distance for the Lady Bearcats in this one as she gave up just five hits and one earned run while striking out six.

Cullman will travel to take on West Point Monday.

Oneonta 2 – Fairview 1 (Baseball)

Both team’s starters pitched a scoreless first inning, but Oneonta would be the team that would crack the scoreboard first in the top of the second. They hit a leadoff double, then they drew a walk. A Fairview error allowed both runners to move up 90 feet, then an RBI groundout put the Redskins on the scoreboard first. In the third, back-to-back Aggie errors with two outs allowed Oneonta to cross the plate as that gave them a 2-0 lead. Fairview finally got something going in the top of the fifth after being held scoreless through the first four innings. Caden Jennings hit a leadoff double, then a passed ball moved him up to third. Connor Scott’s RBI groundout brought home Jennings to cut it to 2-1.

Fairview looked to tie up the game in the top of the sixth. Caden Barrett hit a one-out triple to left field, but a strikeout and a lineout quickly ended the inning for them. The Aggies went down in order in their final at-bats as they ended up dropping a tight game to the Redskins, 2-1.

Scott (RBI), Barrett, and Jennings had the only hits in the game for Fairview (2-4). Nicolas Gregory pitched a complete game two-hitter for the Aggies as he allowed two unearned runs, walked two, and struck out two.

Hokes Bluff 12 – Fairview 6 (Baseball)

Fairview faced off against Hokes Bluff in their second game of the day. Hokes Bluff got hit by the pitch to lead off the game, then a passed ball and a Fairview error allowed their runner to move on up to third. Another Aggie error brought home two Eagle runs as that gave them a 2-0 lead, then later on, Fairview’s third error of the inning brought home another run as Hokes Bluff took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the first.

Hokes Bluff threatened to put some more runs on the board in the third as they had runners on the corners with one out. Barrett picked off an Eagle runner at second base, then a groundout got the Aggies out of the inning unscathed. Fairview got in the run column in the bottom of the third. Daniel Hostetler hit a leadoff single, then Devyn Ellis reached on a Hokes Bluff error. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners up to second and third. Connor Scott drew a walk and that loaded up the bases with one out, then Gregory got hit by the pitch to bring home a run. One out later, Ellis scored on a passed ball to cut it to 3-2.

The Eagles loaded up the bases with two outs in the fourth and a hit by pitch, followed by a walk, brought home two more runs for Hokes Bluff as their lead swelled to 5-2. Hostetler and Ellis drew back-to-back one-out walks, then Crimson Wright lined a two-run double to left field and the Aggie deficit was cut to one at 5-4. The Eagles loaded the bases in the top of the fifth and two more runs came across to score on a Fairview error to make it 7-4, then later on, a three-run homer over the right field fence pushed their lead to 10-4.

Fairview loaded up the bases in their half of the sixth and Colton Jennings scored on a double-play ball to make it a 10-5 game. Ellis later stole home to cut it to 10-6, but the Eagles put up two more runs in the seventh to make it 12-6. The Aggies went down in order in their final at-bats and ended up dropping their game to Hokes Bluff, 12-6.

Wright finished with a hit and two RBIs for Fairview (2-5). West added an RBI, while Barrett York and Hostetler each chipped in with a hit of their own.

Boaz 2 – West Point 1 (Baseball)

Boaz got on the scoreboard first in their opening at-bats. They hit a leadoff double and later scored on a Warrior error to grab the early 1-0 lead, then in the top of the second, they added another run on an RBI groundout. West Point had multiple chances to get in the run column early in the game, but they weren’t able to do that until the sixth inning. Charlie Ashley reached on a leadoff error, then Jay Lamar reached on an infield single. Andrew Putman hit an RBI single up the middle to cut it to 2-1 and they looked to have a big inning as another single loaded up the bases with no outs. Unfortunately, though, that didn’t happen as Lamar got caught trying to steal home. Putman was forced out at home, and Brody Freeman lined out to end the inning.

The Warriors had one last chance to win the game. J.D. Cochran led off the inning with a single, then Colton McCoy hit a double to put runners on second and third with no outs. Three straight strikeouts, though, ended the game and the Warriors dropped a heartbreaker to the Pirates, 2-1.

Putman finished with a pair of hits and the only RBI of the game for West Point (3-5). Cochran, McCoy, and Lamar all added a pair of hits. Boston Freeman, Brody Freeman, and Gus McKenney each collected a hit as well.

West Point 4 – Scottsboro 1 (Baseball)

Scottsboro got a two-out rally going in their opening at-bats as that ended with them scoring on a wild pitch to give them the early 1-0 lead. West Point got something going in the top of the fourth inning as Cochran led off the inning with a single, then McCoy drew a walk. Two strikeouts later, Putman hit a single to load the bases for Lamar, who kept the inning alive for the Warriors with an RBI infield single as that tied the game up at one. A Wildcat error allowed McCoy to score to give the Warriors a 2-1 lead.

West Point added to their lead in the fifth as Boston Freeman hit a leadoff single, then Brody Freeman followed that up with a double. A Cochran RBI groundout and a sacrifice fly by McCoy stretched their lead to 4-1. That was more than run support for Cochran, who ended up going the distance as he finished with seven strikeouts and the Warriors ended up getting the 4-1 win over Scottsboro.

Cochran and Lamar each finished with a hit and an RBI in the game for West Point (4-5). McCoy chipped in with an RBI. Brody Freeman added a pair of hits, while Boston Freeman, Putman, and Sylar Philyaw each collected a hit in the game. The Warriors will host West Morgan on Monday.

Cullman 3 – Fyffe 1 (Softball)

Fyffe would take advantage of back-to-back Cullman errors to get in the run column first in their opening at-bats. Cullman would get in the run column in the bottom of the second inning as Hattie Graham drew a one-out walk and would later score on a sacrifice fly by Brie Voss to tie the game up at one. Wilson retired the Lady Red Devils in order in the third and the Lady Bearcats broke the tie in their next at-bats. Haley Shannon hit a leadoff single, then stole second. She would then score on a Kylie Stracener RBI single to give Cullman a 2-1 lead; later on, a bunt single by Taylor Au brought home Stracener to make it 3-1. That would be more than run support for Wilson, who went the distance and struck out six in Cullman’s 3-1 win over Fyffe. Stracener and Au each finished with a hit and an RBI for Cullman. Voss added an RBI, while Shannon and Reese Hopper each collected a hit in the game.

Cullman 7 – Good Hope 4 (Softball)

Wilson retired Good Hope in order to start out the game, then Cullman got in the run column in their half. Shannon led off the inning with a single and moved to third on a Lady Raider error. Stracener’s RBI groundout gave the Lady Bearcats the early 1-0 lead. The top of the third inning saw Good Hope get something going offensively. Jolee McHan got hit by the pitch with one out, then Lexi Steed lined a single to left field. Bailey Keef reached on a Cullman error, which allowed McHan and Steed to score as that gave Good Hope a 2-1 lead. Keef would move up to third on that same error and Carley Adams hit an RBI groundout to make it a 3-1 game.

The Lady Bearcats countered in a big way in their half. Three straight singles loaded the bases with no outs. After a fielder’s choice, Wilson hit a two-run single to right field to tie the game up at three, then Au followed that up with a two-run double to left field to give Cullman a 5-3 lead. Hattie Graham later hit an RBI groundout and Hopper added an RBI single to push their lead to 7-3. Good Hope looked to make it things interested in the fifth inning. Steed hit a leadoff single, then stole second and moved to third on a Keef single. Steed then stole home to cut it to 7-4, but Cullman kept it at a three-run game after that as Wilson got the final three outs of the contest to help seal the 7-4 win for the Lady Bearcats.

Wilson and Au each finished with a hit and two RBIs for Cullman (5-4). Hopper added a hit and an RBI. Shannon ended up with a pair of hits. Stracener and Graham each added an RBI, while Brooklyn Morton, Abby Maples, and Dracen Bates each chipped in with a hit of their own. For Good Hope, Adams finished with an RBI. Steed added a pair of hits, while Keef, Haley Lay, and Campbell Koch each collected a hit in the game.

Good Hope will host West Morgan Monday in an area game.
