ADDISON, Ala. – Addison hosted area foe Sumiton Christian Eagles for a pair of varsity matchups Tuesday night and came away with a sweep. The Bulldogs took down the Eagles 82-49 while the Addison Lady Bulldogs won their contest 57-26.

Addison 82 – Sumiton Christian 49 (Varsity Boys)

The Addison men played first this evening and got off to a quick start. Addison jumped to a quick 18-7 lead at the end of the first. Sumiton Christian’s men played hard, but it was apparent early in this one that they just didn’t have the athleticism to hang with the Bulldogs tonight. The second period was just as good for the Bulldogs as Addison outscored the Eagles 21-12 to take a 39-19 lead at the half. Brady Gilbreath and Jed “Wizard” Wilkins led the Dawgs in scoring in the opening half.

The second half was a little closer as both teams allowed their role players extended minutes. Addison took the third period 24-17, to extend their lead to 63-36 going into the final frame. The fourth period was basically a scrimmage as Addison won it 19-13 to win the game easily, 82-49. This win should lock up second place in the area for the Bulldogs but they must still get that Tiger off of their backs by somehow beating area champ Meek in the upcoming area tournament.

Gilbreath was pleased after the game,

“This is a great team win because Sumiton (Christian) is not a bad team. Our bench guys really stepped up and brought the intensity to that next level. Our three-point shots were falling and even though we didn’t play our best game we were able to come away with a good win. We just need to keep improving and I believe our best basketball is in front of us.”

Addison 57 – Sumiton Christian 26 (Varsity Girls)

The Addison ladies were expected to come away with a big win and they did just that as they defeated a hard playing, but overmatched Sumiton Christian Lady Eagle team.

The first period had the Ladies of Addison driving the young ladies from Sumiton Christian batty as the Eagles couldn’t handle the lady to lady press defense of the Bulldogs. Addison’s pressure defense had eight steals in the opening period. “Magic” Molly Gilbreath had four steals all by herself. Addison rode their power forward Gracie “Bug” Manley early as she scored at will against Sumiton. Manley had 11 points in the first period. Addison’s Katie Barrett drilled two deep threes for her six points. Addison outscored Sumiton Christian 22-6.

The second period was not a good period for the Lady Dawgs as it looked like they took their collective foot off the gas and basically slept walked through the second period. This did not sit well with Addison Coach Bailey Boland as her displeasure was shown. Coach Boland has high expectations for her ladies and will accept nothing less than maximum effort. Addison won the period 9-8 but it wasn’t pretty. Addison’s Brilyn Dover had a three pointer and Manley chipped in three more points. Lydia “Barbie” Ergle dominated the glass in the second period as she pulled down six rebounds. Annalace Rice tried to keep the Lady Eagles close as she had five points while Emma Potts had five rebounds in the period. Addison took a 31-14 lead into the half.

Addison came out in the second half on fire as the intensity definitely picked up. Six different Bulldogs scored in the period, led by Lauryn “Beemer” Cunningham who drained two three-pointers and grabbed three rebounds. The Lady Eagles were led by Alison Kelly with six points and Potts put in four points. Addison took a commanding lead, 51-24, into the fourth period.

The fourth period had Addison slowing it down and it seemed that no one was in a hurry to score but just to get the game over with. A total of eight points were scored in the final period with Addison scoring six of them. Addison took the victory with a final score of 57-26.

Addison Head Coach Bailey Boland,

“Proud of how we played overall, just not the second period. Our defense is how we want to win games. We try to keep teams from scoring 30 points against us. If you can do that you will put yourself in a great position to win. We are playing better as of late, but we still haven’t played our best ball yet. I believe that some of our younger players have started stepping up and contributing more. They will play better the more confidence that they develop.”
