PREP BASKETBALL: No. 1 Good Hope rolls past West Point 64-30, Raiders pull away from Warriors 74-58

WEST POINT, Ala. – With icy conditions coming to town later tonight, the Good Hope Raiders and West Point Warriors battled it out a little earlier at Jim Boyd Gymnasium Thursday afternoon and both of Good Hope’s varsity squads returned home early with wins over their county rivals. The top-ranked Lady Raiders handled West Point 64-30 to remain unbeaten and the Raiders outscored the Warriors 17-9 in the final frame to pull away and collect a 74-58 win.

Good Hope 64 – West Point 30 (Varsity Girls)

The Lady Raiders jumped out to a 5-0 lead early in the first quarter and Rudi Derrick laid one in later in the period to keep them in front 7-2. Heather Tetro drilled a three-pointer to make it an 11-2 game midway through the first and West Point turnovers led to quick baskets for Derrick, Heather and Bailey Tetro to stretch the lead to 17-2. Hallie Wheeler drained a three for the Lady Warriors on the other end, but Good Hope maintained a 21-7 advantage going into the second quarter.

Laklin Shadix scored the first basket of the second to cut into the lead, but Charly Johnson answered with a three-pointer on the other end to put the Lady Raiders ahead 24-9. Laklin Shadix buried a three later in the quarter to trim the lead to 26-14 and Ella Minck knocked down a jumper to make it a 10-point game with around two minutes to play in the first half. Good Hope pulled ahead 33-18 with a minute remaining in the period but a pair of baskets from Caitlee Simmons and Camryn Faulkner made it a 33-22 game at the halftime break.

The Lady Raiders started the second half strong, extending their lead to 41-22 with buckets from Bailey Tetro, Maddox and Heather Tetro. Wheeler stopped the run with another three, but Good Hope was able to move out in front 47-26 as the third quarter went on. A three-pointer from Maddox made it a 50-26 game with a minute to play in the period and the Lady Raiders went into the fourth leading the Lady Warriors 52-28.

Another three by Maddox added to the lead early in the fourth quarter and Charly Johnson converted a three-point play the free throw line to make it a 58-28 game. Jolee McHan drilled a three to stretch Good Hope’s lead to 61-30 later in the fourth and Lexi Collins drained a three-pointer of her own to cap off a 64-30 win for the Lady Raiders.

Maddox led the way for Good Hope with 20 points. Bailey Tetro finished with 10, Derrick and Bailey Keef each added eight and Heather Tetro posted seven. Laklin Shadix led West Point with seven points in the loss, followed by Wheeler and Liberty Shadix with six and Minck with five.

Good Hope 74 – West Point 58 (Varsity Boys)

With the score tied at 3 early in the opening period, Kolten Perry and Colton Lindsey traded baskets to keep things knotted at 5 before Tyler Cone laid one in to give the Raiders a 7-5 lead. K’mal Bell followed him with a pair of free throws to make it 9-5 and a 7-0 run by Good Hope made it a 16-5 game with three minutes remaining in the first quarter. The Raiders led 20-8 at one point but Jay Lamar drained a three in the final moments of the first to cut the lead to 20-11 going into the second.

West Point continued to chip away at the lead, making it a 25-22 game after back to back scores from Perry. Lamar then laid one in and split a pair of free throws to tie things up at 25 with a little over two minutes to play in the first half. Bell, Weston Hancock and Eli Clements each drained a pair of free throws to give the Raiders a 31-25 lead late in the second Bell knocked down his third three-pointer of the game to keep them in front 34-27 with one minute on the clock. Pressley Burtis scored for the Warriors on the other end to make it 34-39 but Ace Stricklin came sprinting back the other way and laid one in at the buzzer to put Good Hope on top 36-29 at the halftime break.

West Point was able to trim the lead down to 38-36 early in the third quarter but an and-one play by Lindsey gave the Raiders a 41-36 advantage. Back to back three-pointers by Bell made it a 47-41 game later in the third but Lamar was able to knock down his next six free throw attempts to bring the Warriors all the way back to within two with just over a minute to play in the period. However, Good Hope responded and stretched its lead back out to 57-49 at the end of the third thanks to a buzzer-beating three from Clements.

The run that began late in the third quarter continued in the fourth. Back to back scores from Hancock put the Raiders in front 63-51 and Lindsey and Bell each added buckets to make it 67-51. Another three-pointer by Bell stretched the lead to 29 at one point and Good Hope cruised to a 74-58, road win over the Warriors.

Bell racked up a game-high 26 points in the win for the Raiders. Hancock finished with 18 and Lindsey posted 14. Lamar led the way for West Point with 23 points, Perry finished just behind him with 21 and Burtis added 10.
