PREP BASKETBALL: Cold Springs splits season openers against Cordova

BREMEN, Ala. — Basketball season is underway at Cold Springs High School and the Eagles and Lady Eagles were both home at Jesse George Gymnasium Monday to host Cordova. The Lady Eagles quickly pulled away after a close first quarter and ended up dominating the Lady Blue Devils 60-25 while in the boys’ game, a late comeback by the Eagles fell just short and they ended up dropping their game to Cordova 50-44.

Cold Springs 60 – Cordova 25 (Varsity Girls)

Cold Springs got on the scoreboard first on a Maci Brown three, then an Ella Dickerson layup gave them a quick 5-0 lead. Cordova scored the next five points to tie it up at five, but Brown broke the tie with a pair of free throws, then later on, Ella Bruer banked in a trey to make it a 12-7 game with 2:37 left to go in the opening period. The Lady Blue Devils would trim the deficit to just three at 14-11 going into the second period.

Bruer banked in her second three of the first half as that pushed the Lady Eagle lead to 17-11. A free throw by Dickerson and two more from Brown made it a 20-11 game. Malaya Taylor scored on a basket down low, then Brown put in a shot from long range as that increased their lead to 25-13. Taylor and Ciara Calvert each added a basket down low later in the first half, Kenady Graves and Brown each knocked down a trey, and Dickerson ended the first half with a layup as Cold Springs took a commanding 38-15 lead into the half.

Graves drilled a three and Calvert hit a pair of baskets to push the Lady Eagle lead to 45-19, then Dickerson and Mia Light scored the final seven points for Cold Springs as they took a 52-21 lead into the final period. The fourth quarter was run under a hot clock and Cold Springs started out their season with a dominating 60-25 win over Cordova.

Brown led the way for Cold Springs with 15 points and a steal. Dickerson added 11 points, seven rebounds, and two steals, while Bruer (four rebounds and two steals) and Graves (five rebounds and four steals) each ended up with eight.

Cordova 50 – Cold Springs 44 (Varsity Boys)

Both teams had difficulty scoring early on in the varsity boys’ matchup between Cordova and Cold Springs. The Eagles got on the scoreboard with 4:32 left to go in the first quarter on a Nic Fallin layup. Almost a minute later, John Mark Smith knocked down a three to give Cold Springs a 5-0 lead. Cordova scored the next five points to tie the game up at five, but another Smith trey gave Cold Springs an 8-5 lead. A Blue Devil basket made it an 8-7 game going into the second period.

Smith hit a basket down low, and Cameron Nunn added a free throw to push Cold Springs’ lead to 11-7 early on in the second quarter. Cordova went on an 8-0 run as they took a 15-11 lead. Seth Ingram hit a basket down low to cut it to 15-13, but the Blue Devils pushed their lead to 19-13. Smith hit his third three of the first half and Fallin added a late basket to cut the Cordova lead to 21-18 at the half.

Fallin drilled a three from the left corner to tie the game up at 21, then later on, baskets down low by Nunn and Fallin kept the game up at 27. Cordova would go on a late run as they scored 11 of the next 13 points to take a 38-29 lead into the final period. Another Fallin trey cut it to 38-32, but another big run by the Blue Devils pushed their lead to 47-32.

But there was no quit in the Eagles as they embarked on a furious rally to get back in the game. Cole Bales hit a shot down low to make it a 47-34 game, then later on, Fallin hit a layup, Nunn added a pair of free throws, and Ingram hit a shot down low to cut it to 49-40. Bales hit another shot to make it 49-42 and Smith added a free throw to make it a 49-43 game with less than a minute to go in the game, but they wouldn’t get any closer after as they dropped a tough game to Cordova, 50-44.

Fallin finished the game with 16 points, five rebounds, and a pair of blocks for Cold Springs. Smith added 12 points and a steal, while Ingram and Nunn each ended up with five.

Cold Springs will stay at home Friday night to take on Holly Pond.
