VINMEONT, Ala. — The Vinemont Lady Eagles took a huge step in the right direction last season, finishing with 10 wins. They finished as the area runner-up and clinched a spot in the Sub-Regional round as well. Freshman Whitney Quick talked about last season and what a blessing it was to play with a great group of girls. That success helped carry over into the summer play-day games and she learned a lot during those games as well.

“Winning is always a great feeling. It was my first year at Vinemont and I truly enjoyed playing with each and every girl on the team. They are great girls,” Quick said. “I think we did really good in the summer play-day games. We had some big wins, and we can’t wait until the season begins. There is always a learning experience in basketball. I truly believe you learn something new every time you step on the court, whether it’s improving yourself as a player or as a team. I have enjoyed learning and improving with the Lady Eagles and coach James Brown.”

Whitney learned so much from Coach Brown and Coach Emme Willoughby in her first year at Vinemont.

“They are both great coaches. Coach Brown is always pushing us to be a great team because he believes in us. I’m learning a lot from him so far. He is always breaking down or showing me something I may have missed on the court and helping me improve my game as a player,” Quick said. “Coach Willoughby was a part of the practices before last season and brought a lot of knowledge of the game and taught us as a group some great things. I feel like she did amazing with the JV girls last year and she did really good with them during their summer play-day games.”

Vinemont will be bringing everyone back from last season and Whitney took away so much from so many great upperclassmen.

“We were a young team last year with no seniors, so we are all returning again this year. We will have three seniors this year: Berkley Gable, Faith Rusk, and Savannah Keel. They are definitely going to be missed. I’m so glad to be a part of their last season. We also have three juniors: Raylee Quick, Maggie Burks, and Katelyn Evans. They all contribute something different to the team and I definitely have learned something from each and every one of them. I have learned about leadership and teamwork, along with some other things, from them.”

Whitney worked on a lot of things during the summer and has set some goals for herself and the team this season.

“I played all summer with my AAU team, Prodigy, with coach Stover and some amazing, talented girls that have pushed me to be a better player. If we weren’t playing, I picked up with some local teams and play as well,” she said. “My personal goals are to keep studying the game and improving every day. I want to be a better player, not for me, but for the team. Our team goals are to come back better than ever, get more wins this season, and make it to Regionals.”

Whitney talked about what will make this team special this season and for years to come.

“With us being a young group of girls, we are all growing together, and we are excited to see what we accomplish over the next few years as a team.”
