CULLMAN, Ala. – A quick-thinking Cullman Police officer was able to stabilize a dangerous situation Tuesday when a suspect attempted to grab the officer’s service weapon.

According to the Cullman Police Department (CPD), Officer Matt Hollingsworth, who was working an off-duty job, was asked to assist in escorting handcuffed suspect John Robert Harvell, 30, to an awaiting transport unit.

CPD Public Relations Officer Adam Clark said Harvell was under arrest for a probation violation at the time.

“As the officers and Harvell approached a closed door, Harvell made an attempt to take Hollingsworth’s duty weapon,” Clark said. “Officer Hollingsworth was able to secure his weapon and get Harvell under control.”

Harvell was subsequently charged with third-degree escape.

The CPD commended Hollingsworth for his proactive and quick reaction to get the subject and situation under control.
