CULLMAN, Ala. – The City of Cullman Planning Commission met on Monday evening at the City Hall Auditorium tasked with holding public hearings on a rezoning request, several short form subdivision requests and the review of a proposed site plan.

A public hearing was heard for the rezoning of the Klein Building property, located on 3rd Avenue SE between 4th and 5th Street SE. With no one speaking in opposition at the hearing, the rezoning request commenced, and the commission approved to make the recommendation to Cullman City Council for rezoning the property.

The committee heard a public hearing and subdivision request for a property at 413 2nd Avenue SE from one lot to two lots. During the public hearing, local attorney Perry Knight, whose law firm is next to the lot in question, spoke in opposition to the lot division, stating, “It has been indicated to me that the plan is to build a swimming pool on the property.

“I am objecting and it’s obviously not a good plan for a swimming pool next to a law office. I’ve been there for more than 20 years, and I just cannot see how, with all of that commercial property around, how that would be appropriate. I just wanted to voice my objection on a swimming pool being built next to my law office.”

After Mike Voss stated that the commission was reviewing the lot lines, Knight stated he just wanted his objection to be on record.

The subdivision request was approved to move to the city council.

Three additional public hearings for properties at Cullman City Primary School, Cullman Industrial Park and Hwy 278 East were held and the subdivision requests were approved to move forward to city council.

A proposed site plan was reviewed for a proposed convenience store at 2nd Avenue NW and Mitchell Road NW. The commission approved with a representative on hand to confirm the builder is working with ALDOT to address the sole concern about the property.

An annexation request to move a property at 390 County Road 1320 into city limits was approved. Lastly, a recommendation was made to comment planning commission member Barrett Richard on his service and was approved.

The City of Cullman Planning Commission meets on the first Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall. The next meeting will be held on July 5.
