CULLMAN, Ala. – Distinguished Young Women (DYW) of Cullman County will be holding an informational meeting about their program at First Baptist Church of Cullman on March 19 at 10:00 a.m. which is open to all current juniors entering their senior year that reside in Cullman County. Distinguished Young Women is a national scholarship program that promotes and rewards scholarship, leadership and talent in young women. Cash scholarships are awarded to participants in the Cullman County competition for winning different categories like scholastics, talent or interview. Cullman program winners advance to the state program in Montgomery where more than $32,200 is given in cash scholarships.

The program is free to enter, and the Junior girls will participate in life skills workshops to prepare them for the world after high school. Each Distinguished Young Women program evaluates participants in the following categories: Scholastics (25%), Interview (25%), Talent (20%), Fitness (15%) and Self-Expression (15%). The Cullman County program is sponsored through corporate sponsors. Last year, $11,550 was raised to be given to the participants in the program. The cash scholarships can be used by the winners in any way they choose.

Felicia Carden of DYW said, “We teach them public speaking and interview skills to get that self confidence building because they are going to need that going into their senior year for interviews and scholarships and jobs. We are just trying to teach them to be their best self in all avenues. The main thing is that it’s a scholarship program. That’s the main thing we try to let people know. It’s not a pageant because it’s a national program that inspires young high school girls to develop their full potential.”

To apply to the program online, applicants can visit: https://distinguishedyw.org/apply-now/. Applicants should apply by April 10 to participate. The 2023 Distinguished Young Woman of Cullman County will be chosen on June 18 at Wallace State Community College.
