CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman City Council on Monday evening talked about upcoming events around the community both recreational and city services.

Councilman Johnny Cook reminded attendants about the upcoming Cullman Sanitation Department annual spring cleanup March 14-18, 2022. Residents should place bulk items near the curb (not in the street) by 6:00 a.m. on their regular trash pickup day.

The City will pick up furniture (chairs, couches, tables, etc.), appliances (washers, dryers, microwaves, stoves, etc.), mattresses and box springs and other large or bulky items (lamps, boxes, toys, etc.).

The City will not pick up construction materials (rocks, dirt, bricks, concrete), hazardous materials (oil, pesticides, paint), cross ties or tires. There will be no brush, limb or green waste pickup during cleanup week because those trucks and crews will be assigned to bulk cleanup, so please refrain from placing this material out for service.

Councilman Clint Hollingsworth reminded everyone about the annual Strawberry Festival coming up on Saturday, May 7, 2022. The event will feature live music from Grand Funk Railroad, 2021 American Idol Winner Chayce Beckham and The Georgia Thunderbolts, along with an arts and crafts show, food vendors, Miss Strawberry Festival pageant, pet pageant and of course, plenty of strawberries.

Mayor Woody Jacobs told the council that weather conditions have slowed down work on the new water park at the Cullman Wellness and Aquatic Center, but that he still hopes that the park – previously planned for a Memorial Day Weekend opening – will still be open by June 1.

In City business, the council approved resolutions to:

  • Declare and surplus old inventory, equipment, and other assets not needed by the City of Cullman
  • Adopt the 2022 Municipal Wastewater Pollution Prevention resolution to continue its current plan for wastewater management
  • Enter into the Alabama Association of Fire Chiefs Mutual Aid Consortium Agreement to give assistance to and receive assistance from other local departments in times of need
  • Award the bid for a rubber-tired excavator to Cowin Equipment Co. in the amount of $165,805.27
  • Annex 1741 Morning Drive NE into the city limits as R-1 Residential District
  • Rescind an earlier resolution and re-award the bid for timber near the Cullman Wellness and Aquatic Center

The council also approved a request from Ron Pierce of Fairview Florist located at 312 2nd Ave SE for an off-premises alcohol license. The application received a favorable review from the city’s Alcohol Review Committee.

The Cullman City Council usually meets at 7:00 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at City Hall. The public is invited to attend.
