PREP BASKETBALL: Good Hope handles Hanceville 75-39, Lady Raiders down Lady Bulldogs 60-27

HANCEVILLE, Ala. – The Good Hope Raiders and Lady Raiders made the trip over to Hanceville’s Lane Horton Gymnasium Thursday night for a pair of area matchups and both road teams left with big wins. The Lady Raiders pulled away from Hanceville in the second half to pick up a 60-27 win and remain unbeaten in area play while the Raiders bounced back in a big way. After falling to Hanceville earlier this season, Good Hope got its payback Thursday night with an impressive, 75-39 win over the Bulldogs, creating a tie atop the Area 11 standings.

Good Hope 60 – Hanceville 27 (Varsity Girls)

Heather Tetro knocked down a long jumper and a three-pointer on Good Hope’s first two possessions to make it a 5-0 game early and Rudi Derrick laid one in to make it 7-0. A pair of free throws from Bailey Tetro stretched the lead to 9-0 and baskets by Derrick and Tetro later in the period put the Lady Raiders in front 15-0 at one point. Jolee McHan scored to get Hanceville on the board with about three minutes to play in the opening quarter. Victoria Stanley drilled a three and Aaliyah Twitty scored inside to trim the lead to 15-7 going into the second quarter.

Three-pointers by Heather Tetro and Ivey Maddox extended the lead to 21-7 early in the second and Good Hope extended its lead to 30-9 midway through the period. Savannah McAnnally buried a three-pointer to make it a 30-12 game, but the Lady Bulldogs went into the locker room trailing 37-14 at halftime.

Derrick and McHan exchanged baskets to start the second half but another deep three from Heather Tetro kept the Lady Raiders in front 42-16. McHan got another jumper to fall late in the period, but Renee Mcleod scored under the basket just before the buzzer to give Good Hope a 46-21 advantage going into the fourth quarter.

A Bailey Keef basket got the final frame started for the Lady Raiders and Desiree Odachowski and Maddox added buckets to make it a 52-21 game early in the fourth. Lexi Collins scored to put Good Hope on top by 31 with around four minutes to play and with the hot clock running, the Lady Raiders pulled away to defeat Hanceville 60-27.

Heather Tetro led the way for Good Hope with 14 points in the win, followed by Derrick with 12 and Bailey Tetro and Maddox who each posted 10. Twitty finished with eight points for Hanceville. McAnnally added seven and McHan and Stanley each posted six.

Good Hope 75 – Hanceville 39 (Varsity Boys)

Points were hard to come by for these two teams in the opening period. Brayden Harris scored to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead and Colton Lindsey split a pair of free throws on the other end to make it a 2-1 game. That score held for a while before a basket and a pair of free throws from Tanner Malin gave the Raiders a 5-2 lead and they never looked back. Malin dropped in a running floater to add to the lead and Weston Hancock scored in the final moments of the first to put Good Hope on top 9-2 at the start of the second.

It was Noah Barnette’s turn to get hot at the start of the second quarter. Barnette scored the first six points of the period to stretch the Raider lead to 15-2 and Jacob Haynes netted a pair of free throws to make it a 17-2 game. Harris responded with a three on the other end to stop the run but a basket by K’mal Bell and a three-pointer by Lindsey gave Good Hope a 22-7 advantage midway through the second. After another Barnette score, Bell drilled a three to make it 27-7. Bell stayed hot and scored the next five points for the Raiders to give them a 32-9 lead late in the second quarter and after a basket by Haynes, Good Hope went into the locker room at halftime with a commanding, 34-14 lead.

Will Calvert knocked down a three at the start of the third quarter to cut into the lead and a basket by Harris made it a 34-19 game. Baskets by Bell and Tyler Cone kept the Raiders in front 38-19 as the third went on and two more three-pointers from Bell made it 46-21 with just over three minutes remaining in the period. Harris got hot later in the third and scored five straight for the Bulldogs to trim the lead to 50-29 but another basket by Hancock and a buzzer-beating three from Malin put Good Hope in front 55-31 going into the fourth quarter.

The Raiders continued to dominate on both ends of the floor and pull away in the final period. Haynes, Barnette and Hancock each scored early in the fourth to extend the lead to 30 and an emphatic dunk by Barnette later in the quarter made it a 67-34 game. Charlie O’Neil laid one in to put Good Hope in front 72-37 and Tucker Malin drained a three-pointer in the final two minutes of the game to put the finishing touches on an impressive, 75-39 area win for the Raiders.

Bell led Good Hope with 18 points in the win. Barnette posted 14, Malin finished with 13, Haynes added nine and Hancock and Lindsey each posted six. Harris led the way for Hanceville with 17 points.

Good Hope will return home Friday night to host Cold Springs while Hanceville remains at home to host Holly Pond before the county tournament tips off this upcoming week.
