PREP BASKETBALL: Warriors, Raiders compete in summer play day at Good Hope

GOOD HOPE, Ala. – Both the Good Hope Raiders and West Point Warriors participated in a summer play day at Good Hope High School Thursday and both local squads picked up wins in the early part of the day. The Raiders knocked off Deshler 77-72 in their first game and West Point followed them with a 65-36 win over Hatton. Good Hope fell to Cordova 69-66 in its second matchup of the day before playing Hatton in its final game of the day immediately after.

West Point 65 – Hatton 36 (Varsity Boys)

Jayden Laney drilled back to back three-pointer to give the Warriors an early 6-0 lead over Hatton and Kolton Perry added a three of his own to make it a 9-2 game with 15 minutes to play in the first half. The Hornets were able to cut into the lead but a three from J.D. Cochran put West Point on top 12-7. Ethan Gammon laid one in later in the period to make it 16-7 and another basket from Cochran stretched the lead to 19-9 with around eight minutes remaining.

Another three from Perry made it a 22-9 game and Cade Simmons buried a trey to make it 25-9. Back to back buckets from Kanen Trussell gave the Warriors a 20-point lead late in the opening half and West Point went into the break leading Hatton 29-13.

Baskets by Laney and Simmons put the Warriors in front 33-23 early in the second half but the Hornets continued to put together a run and chip away at the lead. A three-pointer from Cochran made it a 36-26 game with just over 14 minutes left in the game and he scored inside to keep West Point on top 38-31 with 12 minutes to play. A Samuel Wheeler layup gave the Warriors a 40-31 lead and Cochran buried another three to make it 43-31. Cochran drilled another three and Trussell scored back to back baskets inside to extend the lead to 50-31 with less than 10 minutes on the clock.

Andrew Lynn knocked down a three to keep the run going for West Point and the Warriors continued to pull away, eventually defeating Hatton 65-36.

Cochran led West Point with 17 points in the win. Trussell finished with 12, Laney and Simmons posted eight and Lynn and Perry each added six.

Cordova 69 – Good Hope 66 (Varsity Boys)

A three-pointer by Charlie O’Neil and a basket from Noah Barnette gave the Raiders an early 5-0 start over Cordova but the Blue Devils were able to respond and tie the game. A basket from K’mal Bell tied the game at 7 and five straight points from Tanner Malin gave Good Hope a 12-11 lead with 12 minutes to play in the first half. Tyler Cone laid one in to make it a 14-11 game and K’mal Bell drilled a three to keep the Raiders in front 17-15 with eight minutes remaining in the opening half.

Five straight points from Cone kept Good Hope on top 25-17 with six minutes on the clock and Bell knocked down another three to make it 28-23. Back to back scores from Barnette gave the Raiders a 32-25 lead late in the half and Malin and Barnette each drilled three-pointers to give Good Hope a 38-33 advantage at the break.

O’Neil and Malin each scored early in the second half to keep the Raiders in front, but Cordova continued to cut into the lead. Baskets by Barnette and Cone made it 49-48 with 12 minutes left to play but Bell scored to make it 51-48. Barnette and Hancock buckets maintained a 55-48 lead for Good Hope but a big run from the Blue Devils trimmed the lead to 60-58 with just under seven minutes remaining.

Malin scored the next two buckets for Good Hope and tied the game at 64 with less than a minute to play but Cordova answered with a big three-pointer to take a 67-66 lead with just a few seconds left to play and went on to defeat the Raiders 69-66.

Tanner Malin led Good Hope with 19 points in the loss.
