PREP SOFTBALL: West Point falls to Hayden at home 12-1

WEST POINT, Ala. – The West Point Lady Warriors returned home to host Hayden for a varsity matchup Thursday night and after building an early lead in the first few innings, the Lady Wildcats were eventually able to pull away and defeat West Point 12-1. The Lady Warriors were held to just two hits in the loss.

After a scoreless first inning, Hayden led off the top of the second with a solo homerun to take a 1-0 lead early in the game. Carlie Wilkins struck out the next three batters to end the top of the second without any further damage on the scoreboard. Wilkins got the top of the third started with two more strikeouts but after an error and a walk gave the Lady Wildcats a pair of runners, a 3-run homer made it a 4-0 game going into the bottom half of the third.

Braelee Quinn led of the bottom of the inning with a single into left field and after a pair of fielder’s choices gave Hayden a couple of outs, Lexi Shadix drove a double into center field to score Bethany Minck and cut the lead to 4-1 going into the fourth.

A passed ball and an error gave the Lady Wildcats two more runs early in the fourth and made it a 6-1 game. A 2-run double later in the inning stretch the lead to 8-1 and another passed ball gave Hayden a 9-1 advantage going into the bottom of the fourth inning. Brindlee Phillips was hit by a pitch and Nikki Tyree drew a walk to give West Point a pair of base runners but back to back strikeouts ended the inning and stranded the runners for the Lady Warriors.

The Lady Wildcats put another 3-run homer over the fence to add to the lead in the top of the fifth and West Point went three up, three down in the bottom half of the inning to end the game in five innings with Hayden on top 12-1.

Wilkins struck out seven batters in the loss and Shadix (1 RBI) and Quinn finished with the two hits for the Lady Warriors. West Point will look to bounce back when it hosts Priceville Monday night.
