FAIRVIEW, Ala. – The Fairview Town Council on Monday night said the Town’s parks and rec baseball, softball and T-ball signups will begin Monday, Feb. 8. Preparations have begun for the upcoming season after last year’s season was canceled due to COVID-19.

The council is planning to have signup forms available in front of town hall with a drop box outside for completed forms. This way signups can be contactless and turned in any time throughout the day. Council members said they are hoping for a great turnout for spring sports this year. Mayor Keith Henry said he was pleased with field preparations leading up to last spring’s season, and he is confident they’ll have them in great shape once again for this season.

The council discussed a proposed Municipal Debris Removal Fund program through the Alabama Municipal Insurance Corporation.

According to the AMIC’s website, “The Alabama Municipal Insurance Corporation (AMIC) has created a new program endorsed by the Alabama League of Municipalities to help offset some of the debris removal costs associated with natural disasters. This program, the Municipal Debris Removal Fund or MDR Fund, is based on a simple concept: your municipality along with other Alabama cities and towns combine forces by contributing an annual set amount to the Fund.

“This program is accomplished through an agreement or contract called a Memorandum of Understanding between your municipality and the other cities and towns that join the Fund This is NOT an insurance policy or product. Nor is it a policy or product of AMIC. It is a simple agreement that says when FEMA declares a Federal disaster in the State of Alabama, your municipality agrees to use a portion of the money in the MDR Fund towards the unreimbursed cost for debris cleanup among all the cities and towns that signed the agreement. Money from the MDR Fund can only be used to cover costs associated with debris removal.”

The council discussed the potential pros and cons of joining the program and ultimately decided to table to the decision until it has gathered more information and reached out to other municipalities.

After approving the month’s bill payments, the meeting was adjourned.

The Fairview Town Council will hold its next regularly scheduled meeting Monday, March 1 at 6 p.m. at Fairview Town Hall.
