VINEMONT, Ala. – The Vinemont Town Council met for its regularly scheduled December meeting Tuesday night, its first meeting since Councilman and former Mayor J.D. Marcum died in November at the age of 85.

Mayor Radginal Dodson said the Town will fill Marcum’s seat, and asked anyone interested to contact the council.

“Due to the recent passing of J.D. Marcum, I’d like to take this time to announce that council place no. 3 seat is now vacant,” Dodson said. “Anyone who would like to be considered for this position who lives inside the town limits may submit a letter to the council by mail, email or hand delivered to the town hall. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to contact the town hall.”

Town Attorney Roy Williams addressed the council about town ordinances. Williams provided each of the council members with a procedural ordinance to aid with the administration of public meetings and answered questions from council members regarding the cost that comes with enforcing some town ordinances and different ways that different communities handle those situations.

Next, the council approved a pair of new resolutions: Resolution no. 2020-12-01 to adopt a new public records policy and Resolution no. 2020-12-02 to provide an amended tax abatement for RCHK Partners, LLC. and BBLU, Inc. The previously agreed upon abatement was $615,000 and the council agreed to increase the amount to $955,000 after seeing the company’s early success.

The council also approved increased security measures on the town hall’s front door and proclaimed January Human Trafficking Awareness Month. Near the end of the meeting, the council approved the digitizing of some of the Town’s most pertinent ordinances and the town council’s meeting minutes.

Before Tuesday night’s meeting adjourned, the council got an update from Public Works Director Mike Graves, who was happy to report that the town’s new disc golf course is now playable and “95% complete.” Graves is also beginning to prepare for park and rec signups in January and said the Town is considering providing an online signup option to help give those who want it a socially-distant way to register.

The Vinemont Town Council will hold its next regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday, Jan. 12 at 6 p.m. at Vinemont Town Hall.
