Cullman council approves COVID-safe special needs Christmas celebration, Arnold St. RR crossing upgrades

CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman City Council on Monday evening approved a request from Cullman Parks, Recreation and Sports Tourism (CPRST) Therapeutic Recreation Special Needs Program for a COVID-safe drive-thru Christmas celebration at Depot Park Dec. 17 from 5-7 p.m. 

According to the request, “Families will remain in their cars and drive around Depot Park as ‘Special Guest’ wave at them. Santa will be at the front of the Christmas tree to wish them a merry Christmas.”

CPRST will give away 100 goodie bags to visitors. To get a bag, those planning to come must contact CPRST by Dec. 15 to RSVP. Email kpulliam@cprst.org or call 256-734-9157.

The council also approved a resolution to enter into a preliminary engineering agreement with CSX Transportation, Inc. for the development of Supplementary Safety Measures (SSM’s) and warning system upgrades at Eighth Street Northwest, Ninth Street Southeast and Arnold Street. According to City Engineer Erica York, the first project will be the installation of cross arms and lights at the Arnold Street railroad crossing.

Additionally, the council approved the City’s participation in the annual Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday that will be held from Friday, Feb. 26 through Sunday, Feb. 28, 2021. Items that will be tax-exempt during the holiday include:

  • Batteries – AAA-cell batteries, AA-cell batteries, C-cell batteries, D-cell batteries, 6-volt batteries, 9-volt batteries, cell phone batteries. Car batteries and coin batteries are not included.
  • Cell phone chargers
  • Radios – portable self-powered or battery-powered radios, two-way radios, weather band or NOAA weather radios
  • Portable self-powered light source, including battery powered flashlights, lanterns, or emergency glow sticks
  • Tarpaulins
  • Plastic sheeting, drop cloths and other flexible, waterproof sheeting 
  • Ground anchor systems, such as bungee cords, ropes or tiedown kits
  • Duct tape
  • Plywood, window film or other materials specifically designed to protect window coverings 
  • Non-electric food storage coolers or water storage containers
  • Non-electric can openers 
  • Artificial ice, blue ice, ice packs or reusable ice
  • Self-contained first aid kits 
  • Fire extinguishers 
  • Smoke detectors
  • Carbon monoxide detectors
  • Gas or Diesel fuel tanks or containers
  • One portable generator priced under $1,000 with power cords

 

Mayor Woody Jacobs reappointed Tommy Waldrop to serve on the City’s Alcohol Review Committee.

The Cullman City Council meets next at 7 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 14 in the city hall auditorium. The public is invited to attend, subject to occupancy restrictions.
