Cullman Regional reports record COVID-19 hospitalizations

CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman Regional on Wednesday reported 35 patients hospitalized with COVID-19. According to Vice President, Marketing Lindsey Dossey, that’s the highest number of COVID-19 hospitalizations to date. Three of those patients are reported to be on ventilators.

“We have seen a significant increase in COVID hospitalizations,” said Dossey. “We have updated our Visitation Policy in order to decrease the number of people in and out of the facility.”

Countywide, according to the Alabama Department of Public Health, 27 new cases were confirmed Tuesday, with 2,313 cases confirmed across the county since the beginning of the pandemic. Of those, 652 were confirmed in just the last 14 days.

Statewide, the ADPH reported 1,488 new confirmed cases Tuesday, with 22,460 in the last 14 days.

It also reported a total of 1,017 patients currently hospitalized across the state.

Cullman Regional’s new visitation guidelines

COVID-19 VISITATION GUILDELINES

Effective November 3, 2020

Per the “Safer at Home” state order issued by Alabama Governor Kay Ivey and the State Health Officer Dr. Scott Harris, each patient of this facility enjoys certain rights to have one caregiver or one visitor present at a time, subject to reasonable restrictions. Compliance with these guidelines by all parties, to include disinfection and social distancing measures, is required at all times.

COVID-19 & Symptomatic PUI (person under investigation) Patients

  • COVID-19 positive or symptomatic PUI patients will not be allowed to have a visitor or a caregiver present at the bedside except in the following situations:
    • Pediatrics – parent/guardian
    • End-of-Life Patients – spouse/significant other/adult child
    • One Caregiver will be allowed to remain with individuals with special needs (i.e., stroke, language barriers, dementia, )

* The patient populations listed above are restricted to one caregiver at a time *

Non-COVID-19 & Asymptomatic PUI (person under investigation) Patients

  • One Caregiver will be allowed in situations where his/her presence improves the patient’s safety, emotional well-being or physical care. The one caregiver must:
    • Be competent in his/her ability to improve the care and understanding of the
    • Follow Universal Masking Guidelines:
      • Patients and Caregivers should be wearing their own face covering upon arrival to the facility and MUST wear it at all times. If they do not have a face covering, a facemask should be offered as supplies allow, which should be worn while they are in the facility at all
      • Face coverings can be made of a variety of materials, including cloth, for the purpose of Universal Source
      • Face coverings should not be placed on children under the age of 2, anyone who has trouble breathing, or anyone who is unconscious, incapacitated, or otherwise unable to remove the mask without
      • Individuals, who are unable to wear a mask, will not be allowed to visit due to the increased risk of disease
    • Agree to practice appropriate hand hygiene and limit the touching of surfaces in patient care areas.
    • Stay in the room: Caregivers are asked to remain in the patient’s room and not leave the department or roam the hospital except for basic personal needs (examples include: food, restroom)
    • Comply with entrance screening: Cullman Regional will continue limited and monitored points of entry, with active Caregiver screening upon
    • Caregivers are encouraged to limit rotating in and out of the facility; however, we understand that this may be necessary at times. Therefore, caregivers are asked to limit any changes to a maximum of one caregiver change per
    • In the Emergency Department only one Caregiver will be allowed for the duration of thepatient’s stay due to the need to limit unnecessary exposures. The Caregiver will not be allowed to rotate with any other Caregiver during the entirety of the patient’s stay in the Emergency Department.
