CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman City School Board on Thursday afternoon approved a plan for the selection of a new superintendent to replace retiring Superintendent Dr. Susan Patterson, who announced last month that she will leave her post next summer. Attorney Taylor Brooks of Lanier Ford Shaver and Payne P.C. laid out the plan for the notice of vacancy, process of selection and timeline, noting that the board will be able to amend the plan in the future.

According to Brooks, the notice of vacancy will be released Nov. 2, 2020 and will be posted at the system’s central office, on the system’s website and in various professional journals. The application period will run from that time until Jan. 4, 2021, and candidates will do their initial application through the law firm’s website. Brooks said he expects to receive 20-25 applications.

From those applications, each board member will rank his or her top five choices and send those lists to the attorney, who will then determine the top five candidates based on the number of votes from board members. The board may choose to increase that number if it wishes. The finalists will be announced to the board Jan. 19, 2021. The board will then interview those candidates while the law firm conducts a detailed background check on each one.

On March 16, 2021, the board will vote on the next superintendent.
