CULLMAN, Ala. – United Way of Cullman County (UWCC) announced Thursday that it will host a modified version of its annual Day of Caring Sept. 15, 2020.

According to UWCC, “The event will provide community members with a meaningful and collective volunteer opportunity and serve as the kick-off to the Annual United Way Campaign.”

“This year we are all having to look for new ways to respond to the challenges we are facing,” said UWCC Executive Director Becky Goff. “Our nonprofits need us now more than ever, and Day of Caring gives us the opportunity to unite and give back.”

Because of COVID-19, volunteers will not gather in large groups like previous Days of Caring, but businesses and organizations will still be able to participate. Businesses are encouraged to gather a team of co-workers, friends or family and select a project that fits the group size and skills. Outdoor projects will be available to adopt at www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0D4FADAA22A6FEC16-dayofcaring (examples include landscaping and painting).

Volunteers are asked to take recommended public health precautions and to avoid close contact, wear face coverings when appropriate and maintain distance as much as possible.

Milo’s will sponsor the event for the third year, and will provide a drive-through breakfast for volunteers on Day of Caring. Team captains pick up meals for their teams, and will distribute T-shirts at that time.

Individuals and groups who want to participate while socially distancing can choose to host a supply drive or collection site for local nonprofits. Individuals and organizations who would like to support Day of Caring without adopting a project are encouraged to wear their United Way T-shirts Sept. 15. Said the UWCC, “Please snap a pic and tag us on Facebook or Instagram! #dayofcaringuwcullman”

“Day of Caring promotes the value of volunteerism and demonstrates that neighbors helping neighbors can create a positive change in the lives of children, families and seniors,” Goff said. “While we still don’t know the financial impact the pandemic will have on donations, United Way will continue to play a vital role in helping our friends and families through these difficult times.”
