COLONY, Ala. – Colony Town Councilman Curtis Johnson on Tuesday afternoon announced his candidacy for mayor of Colony, challenging incumbent Donnis Leeth for the office. Making his announcement sitting next to Leeth during the council’s work session, after council members had been asked to talk about their platforms, Johnson offered no details.

“I’m not going to say much till after I qualify on July 7, then I’ll talk more about it,” he said.

Leeth was not as quiet.

When his turn to speak came, he noted that, when he returned to Colony in 2002 after 21 years of military service, he found the town much the same as when he left. He said he then realized, “If you want a change, step up.”

Leeth recounted his accomplishments as mayor, including the town’s storm shelter, food pantry and community garden, as well as the Dollar General located just across the interstate. He also talked about the relationships he has built with other officials across the county and state, and how those cooperative relationships have helped him get things done.

Said Leeth, “I’m just a peon in politics, but I know a lot of big boys.”

Leeth never looked at Johnson while he made his remarks, but some of his words were clearly directed to his challenger.

The mayor told him, “If you can beat me, you can have it” and “You want to be the big boy, you got to fill the shoe.”

The Municipal Election will take place Tuesday, Aug. 25.
