CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism (CPRST) reopens its archery program with a “socially distant” National Archery in Schools Program (NASP) tournament for elementary, middle and high school students starting Monday, June 15 at the agency’s indoor range located at 1913 Second Ave. SW (U.S. Highway 31). This is the first archery event held by CPRST since the COVID-19 shutdown.
Archers will be scored as individuals, not by teams, so all students are welcome. First, second and third place will be awarded in each school level division.
The tournament is sponsored by Van’s Sporting Goods, and first place winners in each division will receive $25 gift cards to the store. All participants will be eligible for a drawing for one of three (one for each school level) NASP archery targets to be given away by Van’s as well.
CPRST’s Kelly Pulliam told The Tribune, “We decided to do the social distancing tournament because a lot of the school archery shoots were canceled. Whenever schools let out and dismissed, they were just getting into their archery tournaments, so most all those were canceled. Kids didn’t get to finish their season, at all. So (CPRST Archery Director) Anthony (Parker) thought this would be a great way for the archers to have something to do.”
Tournament flights will take place Mondays each hour from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., and Tuesdays through Fridays at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Call 256-734-9157 to reserve a flight time.
Tournament winners will be announced July 1.
The CPRST Indoor Archery Center is open for recreational shooting Tuesdays through Fridays from 3-7 p.m. for $5 per hour.
Said Pulliam, “We’re just trying to get the word out that we’re still open. Come shoot!”
