CULLMAN, Ala. – Alabama continues to see an increase in the number of cases of COVID-19, adding 848 since this same time Wednesday, along with 11 deaths in the same time period.

Cullman County has added a total of 124 new cases in the last 14 days, more than half of the county’s total of 220.

Cullman Regional on Thursday reported nine COVID-19 patients, with four on ventilators. In its report last week, there were six COVID-19 patients, with one on a ventilator.

The hospital, in its report Thursday, stated, “(The) majority of new cases appear to be through general community spread; therefore, all community members are cautioned to practice safe social distancing recommendations, practice good hand hygiene, and anyone who is sick is asked to stay home in order to avoid infecting others.”

Alabama’s State Health Officer Dr. Scott Harris, in an interview with The Tribune Tuesday, June 9, said the reason for the uptick in cases in Cullman in unknown, explaining, “I don’t know for certain. I know we certainly have seen some outbreaks in that part of the state that have been associated either with workplaces, like poultry processing, or in some cases, long-term care facilities, but I don’t know that specifically about Cullman County.”

Back on June 6, the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) posted on its COVID-19 Data and Surveillance Dashboard, “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH), and its vendor have resolved issues related to delays that affect the number of cases and tested reported on this dashboard. As a result of a reporting backlog, this dashboard appears to display sizeable increases in all numbers. The reason is that there has been a lag time in adding some reports. The national surveillance pipeline became overwhelmed earlier this week due to a large increase in the volume of COVID-19 laboratory results. ADPH staff worked tirelessly with CDC and its vendor to resolve the issues as quickly as possible.”
