CULLMAN, Ala. – Saturday morning was an exciting introduction to fall for the North Alabama Agriplex’s Farm Kids Club. The topic for November was “Turkey Time,” and the children got to get up close and personal with Tom the Turkey.

Agriplex Director Rachel Dawsey took groups of children to meet the big bird.

“His name is Tom; he’s a gobbler from Josh Speakman. Josh has been good to us and to help us with poultry,” said Dawsey. “We’re bringing him back. He was a pet Josh got about six months ago; somebody was moving and couldn’t keep him. He’s very friendly for a turkey, so they were able to pet him. He’ll go back home today. He has a nice little setup at the barn and a nice friend so he doesn’t have to worry about Thanksgiving this year!”

She continued, “It was good because they could see a turkey up close and he was gobbling for them and he was strutting around so they got to see him parade in with his full tailfeathers up, so that was fun!

Agriplex Youth Educator Nicole Taylor had other activities for the children Saturday morning.

“I played ‘Pin the Feathers on the Turkey’ with the children, shared turkey facts with them and then just helped organize some of the stuff ahead of time,” said Taylor. “I love sharing everything with the kids, and the great part about the Agriplex is I learn a lot of obscure things that I probably wouldn’t know about daily by all of the programs we offer.  I feel the kids, they learn a whole of stuff that they probably wouldn’t cover in school, as in-depth.”

The Farm Kids Club is a monthly program offered by the North Alabama Agriplex for kids ages 5 and older with adults. Learn more at http://agriplex.org.
