GOOD HOPE, Ala. – The Sizzlin’ Seniors of Good Hope knew exactly what to do on a cool and cloudy pre-Halloween day. Throw a party, of course! Twenty crock pots filled with a variety of hot soups and chili, a table full of desserts including Jan Junkin’s spectacular spice cake and a room full of fabulous Halloween costumes helped make this year’s Halloween party a huge success.

A full house came out to celebrate with friends at the Good Hope Senior Center, located in the basement of the city hall. There were a few celebrity sightings as Popeye and his leading lady Olive Oyl, Cleopatra, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head and The Incredibles decided to attend.

Partygoers played bingo, but with a fun twist. Whoever won a game was required to share a funny joke, and there were plenty of jokesters in attendance. The laughing had everyone fired up as the costume winners were announced by Mayor Jerry Bartlett and Councilman Greg Brown.

The overall winner for best costumes went to Popeye and Olive Oyl (Gary and Charlene White).

The City of Good Hope has been working hard in an effort to make the Sizzlin Senior program a success. Under the direction of Brown, the seniors meet the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month from 9 a.m. through lunch. In addition to the normal Tuesday gatherings, monthly day trips are also being planned.

Brown said of the November trip, “We are taking a trip to Helen Keller’s Home, the Alabama Music Hall of Fame and lunch at Two Fat Sisters. It’s going to be a lot of fun. We have to have 40 signed up, but have room for 50.”

The trip, planned for Nov. 22, is $50 and includes admission to the planned attractions and lunch. Interested seniors can sign up through Nov. 8. To register for the day trip, contact Lori at Good Hope City Hall.

The next Sizzlin Seniors meeting will be Tuesday, Nov. 12, and they are planning a sock hop. A band will be playing the oldies for the dance, so get those saddle shoes and loafers dusted off!
