CULLMAN, Ala. – Despite busy activity elsewhere in Cullman with the Cullman County Fair opening and Oktoberfest well underway, West Elementary’s campus was bustling with kids wanting to dance and play Thursday evening at the school’s annual festival, West Fest.

West Elementary PTA President Jessica Svarney shared, “West Fest is our annual fall fundraiser that we do every year; it’s our biggest fundraiser of the year. Kids are only charged two tickets per game; they get a prize no matter what. We have tons of candy that we give out to them and we have the inflatables! This year we have a DJ and we’re doing a dance-off and kids can request a song for one ticket, and then of course we have all our food inside.”

This is Svarney’s fifth West Fest. She shared a bit of the event’s history.

“They’ve had West Fest since the 80s, but I think it was called something else back then and it was inside, in the classrooms and such. Just within the last four or five years, we moved outside,” she said.

West Elementary Receptionist LaQuita Dixon noted West Fest was originally called the “Fall Festival.”

All funds raised Thursday evening at West Fest will go back to the school.

“They go straight back to the school! We’re using that money hopefully this year to buy a new projection screen for the lunchroom and a sound system,” said Svarney, who said she felt positive about the evening.

“I’m just really glad that so many have come out to support the school tonight. I know it’s hot, but I’m so glad everyone came out, and it’s great to see all these families out here having fun, too!”
