CULLMAN, Ala. – Every Tuesday morning, you will find the VFW Auxiliary hard at work preparing a delicious lunch not only for veterans who belong to the VFW, but also for homebound veterans and the community. The outreach program is a labor of love for the brave men and women who have served this great nation.
This Tuesday, a group of approximately 20 Cullman area veterans enjoyed creamy baked chicken, baked beans, mashed potatoes and garlic bread.
VFW Auxiliary President Dee Harris said, “We put the menu up on our Facebook page every Monday. Chicken and dressing is probably the most popular.”
The meals are served at the Cullman VFW and delivered to those veterans who are homebound as well as their spouses and caregivers. Often, area businesses will order to-go lunches. The Tuesday lunches are the main fundraiser for the Auxiliary.
“We periodically have yard sales, but you can’t have a yard sale every week,” Harris explained. “Everyone here is a volunteer. Nobody here gets paid. I don’t, my husband doesn’t. We are not veteran-funded. It is all generosity of the people in this city and county.”
The hot homemade meals are only $5, and for groups or businesses who wish to pick up lunch or join the veterans, they are welcome to do so. Harris asks that people simply call or comment on Facebook ahead of time, so the Auxiliary know how many meals are needed.
Thurman Ryan, a World War II veteran, is a regular for Tuesday lunch and said he looks forward to seeing his friends each week.
“It’s a great outreach and we welcome other veterans and guests,” said Cullman VFW Post 2214 Commander Will Harris. “It’s a great opportunity for them to swap stories and enjoy the camaraderie.”
The lunches are served every Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at the VFW, located at 112 Veterans Dr. SW in Cullman.
