COLONY, Ala. – The seniors of Colony brought class, style and sass to their second annual Sassy Seniors at 60 Plus Fashion Show Saturday night. Models of all ages showed off their unique and stylish fashions to a full house at the Colony Educational Complex. The fashion show is a fundraiser for the Colony Senior Center, which provides fellowship, activities and meals to senior members of the community.
Saturday night’s fashion show honored Florine Leeth, Mary Hall and “bingo queen” Ophelia Fields. The group also remembered three wonderful ladies the community lost this past year: Mamie Jukes, Verla Hubbert and Vanetta Turner.
Letitia Johnson welcomed everyone and thanked them for their support of the Colony Senior Center, smiling, “The seniors of Colony, Alabama… it is the vision and the dream of the elders in this community to have a center where they glow and grow older with style.”
The children took to the runway first in adorable and fashionable back-to-school and fall looks as well as beautiful dresses for more formal occasions. The models strutted their stuff and wowed the crowd with their fabulous fashion choices and confident attitudes.
The ladies of Colony were up next. Trending this year are bold color and sling back heels. Various shades of purple, pinks and greens ruled the runway, and the models showed that no fall outfit is complete with the perfect hat and accessories. Suit ensembles with a variety of textures are also very popular and perfect for church or business. The seniors really showed everyone how “Sunday morning” is meant to be done.
Barbara Marsh Moody, Ms. Senior Cullman County 2010, the first African American to earn the title, also participated.
“I thank God for allowing me to do that,” said Moody. “I made a lot of long-lasting friends and I try to go back every year and help the girls there and coach them on.”
Wearing her crown and sash, she looked as stunning as ever. She treated everyone to her beautiful rendition of “I Trust in God.”
Area ministers and first ladies traveled to be a part of the fashion show and were featured as the couples modeled their Sunday finest. Bishop Dr. Oscar and First Lady Mary Turner from Progressive Church of Victory in Warrior, Rev. Theodore and First Lady Agnes Hines from St. James United Methodist Church in Warrior, Rev. Odis and First Lady JoAnn Minnitt from Hopewell United Methodist Church in Pinson and Pastor Nicolas and First Lady Pamela Nalls from First Church of God of Colony modeled their Sunday finest to huge applause.
The fashion show wouldn’t be complete without an appearance from one of the most stylish men in Colony. Mayor Donnis Leeth was “fashionably’’ late, but his runway appearance was worth the wait. Leeth wore a cream-colored suit with matching hat. He posed for cameras and sashayed across the runway delighting everyone in the room.
“I hope we never ever get rid of dressing up. I love dressing up. I know times are changing, but we need to hold onto what we have,” Colony Councilwoman Ethel Alexander said of the church fashions that were the highlight of the show.
