CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center announced Tuesday that Peggy Smith has been named the Chamber’s interim president. The Chamber’s Board of Directors approved the decision Tuesday at its regular monthly meeting.

“On behalf of the Board of Directors and all of our members, I am pleased to announce that Peggy Smith will serve as the interim president for the Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce,” said Kay Shabel, chairman of the Chamber’s Board of

Directors. “Peggy has been doing great work on behalf of the Chamber as our community relations manager. I am confident that with the additional responsibilities as interim president she will provide the leadership the Chamber needs at this time.”

Smith spent more than 30 years as the director of the Cullman Economic Development Agency, bringing unprecedented growth to Cullman County and establishing Cullman as one of the leading communities for economic development in the country. In 2017, she started working with the Chamber as strategic planning coordinator, and has worked since June as the Chamber’s community relations manager.

“I am excited about this new opportunity to serve our community,” said Smith, who is a past chairman of the Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce board. “My work over the past several months has given me a great appreciation for the efforts of the

Chamber’s staff and the impact the Chamber has on our community. It is imperative for the future of Cullman County that we have a strong Chamber of Commerce, and I will do all that I can during this interim period to make sure the Chamber builds on its past success and continues working with our strategic partners to make Cullman County even better in the future.”
