CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman County’s chapter of People Against a Littered State (PALS) is taking nominations through April 30 for area businesses to be considered for its 2019 Beautification Awards.  PALS recently took charge of the program after several years of it being handled by the Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce.

The stated purpose of the awards program is to “recognize the efforts of the many businesses that work hard to make the Cullman area a beautiful place for everyone to enjoy.”

Entries and a $20 nomination fee must be received by 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30.  Winners will be named during the Beautification Awards Luncheon at Camp Meadowbrook on June 20.  All nominees will receive a complimentary ticket to the luncheon.

Rules

  • Anyone may nominate a property.
  • Business owners may nominate their own properties.
  • Judging will be performed by a panel of master gardeners from surrounding counties on criteria including:
    • Design
    • Maintenance
    • General Appearance
    • Litter Control
    • Planting
  • Judging will focus on landscaping, and will not consider building or structural renovations
  • Nominees can have no contact with judges before or during judging

Cullman County PALS Chairperson Cherrie Haney told The Tribune, “It encourages people to keep their properties nice and pretty.  And what better way to get people to come to Cullman than to have the properties look very nice!

“I’d encourage everybody to get out and nominate your property.  We’d love to have those nominations out there for people to see. I don’t know if they’ve seen them, but Merchants Bank right there on (U.S. Highway) 31 and Peoples Bank right there on 31 have the beautification signs, so that’s really good.  That lets people know that you’re going the extra mile.”

Community cleanup coming

Haney also shared that Saturday, April 27, following Earth Day on the 22nd, will be Cullman’s community cleanup day from 8 a.m. to noon.  She’s encouraging folks to help clean up to 1 mile from their homes or places of business.

Free garbage bags will be available at locations to be announced around the county, and the County will be setting out dumpsters where people can bring picked-up litter.  All manner of trash can be dropped off, except tires, paint and chemicals.
