HANCEVILLE – The Wallace State 2018-2019 men’s and women’s cross country teams were recognized Tuesday night by Hanceville Mayor Kenneth Nail and the Hanceville City Council. Both teams were congratulated for Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) championship seasons. Tanner King earned ACCC Runner of the Year and Coach Stan Narewski was honored as ACCC Coach of the Year, his 29th Alabama Community College Conference and Region 22 Coach of the Year Award for Cross Country and Track and Field.

The teams and coaches presented the City with a signed team photo.

Narewski said, “Thank you to the City for being a great home away from home for our students and our runners.”

Assistant Coach Tony Crider added, “We thank the City for helping with our walking and running trails. We are coaching distance runners and they now have miles of trails that are off the road. I want to invite the public to share these trails. They are for everyone to enjoy.”

In new business, Joey Hester, who heads Hanceville’s Alabama Communities of Excellence (ACE) team, presented the Downtown Improvement Plan for the council’s consideration.

Hester said, “We held several public meetings to include input from the community as well as the downtown planning committee and the Hanceville Planning Commission. We have incorporated all the input into this plan for downtown.”

The council agreed to take time to review the plan over the next two weeks. The vote to adopt the plan (Resolution no. 633) was postponed until the council’s Dec. 13 meeting.

Hester and Nail encourage the community to join them at the Hanceville Civic Center on Monday, Dec. 17 at 6 p.m., when an ACE strategic planning meeting will be held.

The 29th annual Cullman County Christmas Parade, hosted by the Hanceville Civitan Club, will take place this Sunday, Dec. 2 at 3 p.m. This year's grand marshal will be Sen. Garlan Gudger, R-Cullman and the theme is "The Joy of Fellowship."

The parade will travel from College Drive south on U.S. Highway 31 to Hanceville Fire Station 1, where there will be an open house.

The parade was originally scheduled for Saturday but was moved to Sunday due to the threat of storms, according to Hanceville Civitan Brenda Carter.

"The Cullman County EMA (Emergency Management Agency) said that the storms will be rolling through Saturday into Sunday and be out by Sunday morning," said Carter. "You can't have a parade without a marching band. You can't get the instruments out in that weather. It's supposed to be nice and sunny on Sunday."

Entries will be taken up until the parade begins. Those interested in participating should contact Brenda Carter at 256-887-3508. The entry fee is $5. Line up will be at 2 p.m. at Wallace State.

The Hanceville Civitan’s Tinsel Trail and Tree Lighting will take place Saturday, Dec. 8 at 5 p.m. in Veterans Park. Those interested in participating should contact Carter. Downtown merchants will be open for shoppers following the festivities.
