Local seniors enjoy their prom this week at the Cullman Senior Center.

CULLMAN – More than 40 seniors enjoyed their prom this week. Senior citizens, that is. The special event, put on by the Cullman County Commission on Aging at the Cullman Senior Center, was complete with live music, good food, dancing and some very happy folks.  Ladies had the opportunity to hit the dance floor in some very fancy prom dresses donated to the center for the event.  The Butch Bradford Band provided the entertainment.  Overseeing the festivities was center Director Kristie McCarn.

“We did one a couple of years ago,” said McCarn, “but we skipped last year, because we were taking other trips.  Kelly (Townsend) got a lot of the dresses donated that some of them are wearing.  We thought it might encourage them to dress up, if the dresses were actually here.

“My seniors helped decorate and plan, volunteers stayed over yesterday to help decorate; and today, if I needed any help, they were there.  The seniors are always willing to jump in and help.”

Townsend helped coordinate the event and get the prom dresses that ladies wore.

She shared, “I put something on Facebook, asking people to donate prom dresses for the seniors, and I got a big response.  People throughout the state of Alabama donated those dresses.  There’s about 30 of them.”

McCarn took a moment to share a bit about the Cullman Senior Center.

“Everybody 60 and older is invited to come to the senior center Monday through Friday.  We’re here from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and we serve lunch every day at 11:30.  We just encourage all the seniors to come- get out and participate.  We have different activities every day: live band with karaoke on Thursdays, gospel singing and devotion on Fridays, bingo and other activities throughout.  We take trips and do other things.  Anyone who wants to come just needs to try it!”

The Cullman Senior Center is located at 1539 Sportsman Lake Rd NW.
