CULLMAN – Bars and nightclubs around the country have been instituting a new procedure to help women who feel threatened by others who might not be able to take a hint, and in most cases, continue to make advances after a plain “no.” The trend is “Angel Shots.” The premise is that if a woman orders an “angel shot,” the bartender will know they need some assistance. The idea is to discretely let the staff of the establishment know there is a problem, so the woman can be escorted to a cab, the one making the unwanted advances can be ejected from the bar, and everyone can stay as safe as possible.

Cullman is a town not necessarily known for its bustling nightlife; however, there are several bars around town, and there is always the potential for trouble when alcohol is involved.

Most all of the chain restaurants, such as Logan’s Roadhouse, Ruby Tuesday and Applebee’s, declined to comment on their protocol for helping women who feel threatened, instead referring questions to a phone number for human resources, as corporate franchises are wont to do.

Grumpy’s Italian Grill, known for its mullet-style layout (business at the top, bar in the back, downstairs) did not comment on its policy for assisting threatened women.

Moe’s Original Bar-B-Que’s Manger Jeremiah Connell stated that while his restaurant does not participate in the “angel shot” program, he has a zero-tolerance policy for unwanted activity in his establishment.

“If I am here and I see anything going on, a woman being harassed, or anyone who has had too many drinks, that person is out,” Connell said. “Depending on how serious the incident is, that person may not be allowed back. Second chances do not seem to do much good in these cases.”

If you are visiting a bar and have any worries or concerns, it is always a good idea to get the bartender’s attention when you arrive before you get your night underway, that way he or she will be attentive to any situations that arise. And always, if the bar you’re in doesn’t participate in the “angel shot” program, let your bartender know directly if you feel unsafe.

Other Cullman bars and locations where alcohol is served (Brothers, The Busy Bee, Augusta’s) did not return requests by The Cullman Tribune for comment.
