CULLMAN – A Cullman man was arrested this week for allegedly burglarizing Tobacco Country on U.S. Highway 278 West and Cleveland Avenue. David Eric Sanders, 28, was charged with two counts of third-degree burglary.

On Tuesday, Cullman City Police Department (CPD) Investigators Chris Thomason and Justin Craft, along with Lt. Jody Martin, Lt. Jeff Warnke and Officer Trey Higginbotham, arrested Sanders. Shortly after 11 p.m. Sunday night, the CPD received an alarm call from Tobacco Country. When officers arrived they observed the side door had been smashed with a rock or brick. Officers took a report at the time, then looked at the surveillance footage, and the owners of the business repaired the damaged door.

When the owners returned between 7:30-8 a.m. Monday morning, they found the glass in the front door had been broken out, and police were again notified. Officers and investigators responded to the scene and reviewed the surveillance footage.  After watching the footage and speaking with the business owners throughout the day, investigators identified Sanders as a suspect.

Investigators went to the suspect's residence on Hickory Avenue, located a few blocks from the crime scene, and made contact with Sanders. Several items that were reported stolen from the business were recovered, and Sanders allegedly confessed.

Investigators arrested Sanders for two counts of third-degree burglary and transported him to the Cullman County Detention Center, where he was booked in without incident.

"I would like to thank all investigators and patrol officers for exceptional work in the quick resolution of this case," said Capt. Becky Boyd.
