CULLMAN – On Nov. 12 a suicide bomber managed to make his way onto Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan.  According to Jeremy Hogan, founder of the local veterans’ support organization Saving Forgotten Warriors (SFW), the harm at the base extended beyond the immediate tragedy of lost lives and wounded personnel.  Bagram's Post Exchange (PX) was also damaged, which has made it difficult for soldiers to get many personal items they would normally purchase there.  Simple items like toothpaste and socks are currently a challenge to procure.

That's where Hogan hopes to step in.  SFW is putting together care packages to send to troops stationed at Bagram.  According to the organization's website, each package will contain:

Bible (if allowed), tooth paste, shaving cream, disposable razors, mouth wash, floss, baby wipes, pack of socks, snacks, magazine, crossword puzzle book and a thank-you card.

Donated goods can be dropped off at the following locations:

SFW office at 1528 Peachtree Lane in Cullman
Big B Emart at 1056 Alabama Highway 69 in Cullman
Metro PCS at 1648 Second Ave. SW in Cullman

The SFW website also has options for mail-in and online donations of funds to purchase goods and pay for shipping.  Visit http://SavingForgottenwarriors.org/Christmaspackage, or call 256-747-5006 for more information.

The deadline for donations is Dec. 17, to allow time for packages to reach Afghanistan in time for Christmas.
