CULLMAN – It was tough sledding for both the boys’ and girls’ squads of St. Bernard when Southeastern came calling Thursday night.

Southeastern 60, St. Bernard 37 (boys)

Christian Peterson scored 31 of the 37 St. Bernard points Thursday night, but it was not enough as the Saints fell to Southeastern 60-37. Both teams got off to a slow start in the first quarter, with Peterson recording just five of his 31 in the first. He stepped up the output in the second with nine, including a pair of threes to pull St. Bernard to within two, 20-18, heading to the halftime break.

Southeastern stretched their lead to six in the third quarter on the strength of an 8-point performance by Cameron Robertson.

St. Bernard stayed close in the fourth, getting to within three points of the lead but back-to-back threes from Robertson sparked a 21-2 run that lasted for three-and-a-half minutes and put the game away.

Southeastern 50, St. Bernard 42 (girls)

Hamstringed with several players returning late from a field trip due to the fires on I-65, the Lady Saints had a tough time getting anything going. From the opening tip, Southeastern controlled the court and the game. Southeastern opened the game with an 11-5 first quarter start thanks to the play of Katelyn McMurrey, who led all scorers in the first with four points. St. Bernard fires back in the second, outscoring Southeastern 9-6 to trail by just three heading to the half.

Thanks in part to the strong play by Ashley Duke, the Lady Saints took their first lead of the game with 4:24 left to play in the third, but it was short-lived as Southeastern finished the third on a 5-1 run to carry a 33-22 lead to the final frame, where they held on to the lead, taking the game 50-42.
