CULLMAN – Well over 50 members of the Cullman County Republican Party gathered Saturday morning for the group's monthly breakfast meeting at the Cullman Elks Club. Attended by many local movers and shakers, the meeting featured speaker Luther Strange, Attorney General of Alabama.

The meeting was opened by Cullman GOP Chairman, Kelly Duke, then the floor was given to the two gentlemen who will be meeting in the Cullman County Commission Chairman runoff, Darrell Hicks and incumbent Kenneth Walker.

Both men thanked their respective voters and encouraged everyone to show up again at the polls in April. Cullman County Probate Judge Tammy Brown reminded everyone that the runoff election will take place on April 12.

Commissioner Garry Marchman, whose cancer is in remission, graciously thanked his party members for their thoughts and prayers during his battle.

Introduced by Sen. Paul Bussman, R-Cullman, who met Strange years ago at a church retreat, Strange joked that he was “happy to be here when there’s no issues in the Republican party.”

Strange, originally from Homewood, covered topics ranging from the BP oil spill settlement to immigration laws during his time at the podium noting “federal government overreach” as one of the prime issues of concern within the Republican party currently.

Cautioning that “we live in times when our whole system is under attack,” Strange assured the gatherers that the attorneys general throughout the nation are “the last line of defense” in upholding constitutional law.

Strange stressed the importance of a strong Congress as the most important branch of government and expressed his high hopes in Paul Ryan, R-Wisconsin, current speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, exerting his leadership role.

Strange keeps a full workload working on Second Amendment rights, voting rights and the myriad of other issues that come through his office.
