We are always so grateful for the opportunity to give back to Cullman County through Day of Caring. While we provide financial assistance year round, this is a great opportunity for us and our volunteers to get our hands dirty and help out our agencies and individuals that need it.”

CULLMAN – On Tuesday, September 15th, Cullmanites volunteered their time to United Way of Cullman County’s Day of Caring; benefiting the variety of agencies that United Way funds.

“We invited our agencies to turn in projects they needed help with, either at their locations or for one of their clients,” explained Stephanie Wood, Marketing and Communications Director at United Way of Cullman County.

“We also asked local churches if any of their members needed anything. The tasks could be anything from something minimal and easy to something great and difficult. Either way, by our volunteers adopting the projects, the agencies, families, etc., were able to focus on what it is important and not worry about these things.”

“We are always so grateful for the opportunity to give back to Cullman County through Day of Caring,” Wood continued. “While we provide financial assistance year round, this is a great opportunity for us and our volunteers to get our hands dirty and help out our agencies and individuals that need it.”

Volunteers accomplished a variety of tasks for the community including:

  • Yard work, pressure washing and small house repairs at Daystar House, a shelter for women and children

  • Pressure washing and window cleaning at the Pilot Light House, a local foster care home

  • Clothes sorting, yard work, gate repair, and parking lot cleaning and painting at Victim Services of Cullman

  • Thoroughly cleaning a local elderly woman’s home

  • Major yard work for an aging couple whose property had become completely overgrown because they do not have the ability to maintain it

  • Cut grass, remove weeds and blow leaves off gravestones at Cullman Memory Gardens

Volunteers from Walmart worked for two days cleaning up Cullman Memory Gardens. There was a total of 50 volunteers, roughly 25 each day. The group was able to secure a $5,000 donation from their company.

“We just feel like this is a big part of the community effort to get Memory Gardens back up and looking like it should,” said Kathy Booher, a weekend manager for Walmart.

“We try to do it at least once a year for United Way as a volunteer day. We really enjoy it. It gives us an opportunity to be helpful to the community plus it also helps us get back together as a group.”

“We could not have completed all these tasks without McGriff Tire, our sponsor, and the wonderful men and women from REHAU, Payroll Services, Rusken, Brandin' Iron Steakhouse, Wallace State Community College, Yutaka, and YAP (Youth Advocate Programs, Inc.),” Wood added. “It’s refreshing to see such a great group of people willing and eager to help those in need!”
