CULLMAN, Ala. – The 2021 United Way of Cullman County “Day of Caring” saw neighbors helping neighbors throughout the community Friday. Individuals and groups volunteered for a number of projects available through the United Way in support of area nonprofits and the community as a whole. Executive Director of United Way of Cullman Becky Goff pointed out that even those receiving help paid it forward by helping on other projects.

Volunteers from Publix and Merchants Bank kicked off the Day of Caring at the Cullman County Child Development Center. Volunteers from Publix worked on projects around the CCCDC’s playground and Merchant’s Bank volunteers prepared a great lunch for the students and staff of the school.

“One of the really awesome things about that today is that we had two businesses that were out there helping to serve lunch and Publix refreshing the playground, but volunteers from the CCCDC went to another one of our other agencies, the Youth Advocacy Program, and mulched their raised flower beds and cleaned them out. It was really great to see that.”

Volunteers from Rehau were treated to a tour at Hope Horses before helping to mulch and clean up the beds around the therapeutic riding facility. While part of the group cut back shrubs and pulled up weeds, another group raked and picked up limbs and other debris on the sensory trails. After those projects were completed, the group finished by cleaning inside the barn.

Other projects that took place during the Day of Caring were Reliance volunteers who worked at the Agriplex and volunteers who lent a hand at Victim’s Services. Due to COVID, others opted to serve as collection sites for other projects including the Cullman Electric Co-op, Peoples Bank and Payroll Services.

Goff said that several projects are still available for those interested in volunteering through the United Way. The projects that were not selected are listed at https://www.uwaycc.org/ and Goff said, “those are a little bit harder projects.” The Annual Day of Caring is the kick-off of each year’s United Way Campaign.
