PREP FOOTBALL: Brooks pulls away from West Point, 47-21

KILLEN, Ala. – West Point stayed within striking distance through the first half Thursday night, but Brooks pulled away after halftime to defeat the Warriors 47-21 in a Class 4A, Region 7 matchup.

The loss dropped West Point to 0-7 overall and 0-4 in region play. Brooks improved to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the region.

West Point received the opening kickoff, but its first possession ended when Brooks intercepted a pass and took over at its own 15-yard line. 

The defenses controlled the remainder of the first quarter, which ended scoreless after the Warriors punted the ball back to the Lions.

Brooks opened the scoring with 9:20 remaining in the second quarter, finishing a drive that took nearly three minutes and taking a 7-0 lead.

The Warriors answered when Max Patterson connected with Carter McAfee for a touchdown with 7:13 left in the half, tying the score at 7.

After West Point stopped Brooks on downs, Patterson found McAfee for another touchdown. The score gave the Warriors their first and only lead of the night, 13-7, with 4:20 remaining before halftime.

Brooks responded with a touchdown before the break, sending the teams into halftime tied at 13.

Both offenses were held scoreless early in the third quarter before Brooks moved ahead 19-13 with 4:20 remaining in the period. 

West Point’s ensuing possession ended on downs near the Brooks 30-yard line, and the Lions capitalized when Ro Thompson scored with 2:45 left to extend their lead to 26-13.

The Warriors turned the ball over again as the third quarter expired, and Brooks added another touchdown early in the fourth to stretch the margin to 33-13.

Patterson scored on a 1-yard run later in the fourth quarter, cutting the Brooks lead to 33-21. The Lions answered with two more touchdowns to close the scoring and secure the 47-21 victory.

West Point will return home to host Hamilton on Friday, Oct. 9.
