CULLMAN, Ala. – A new independent bookstore opened in Cullman this week, combining a love of books with a passion for gardening. Arboreadum Bookshop and Garden is housed in a historic home near downtown Cullman.
Owner Shannen Cottingham offers new books in many genres, along with a variety of plants and gardening supplies. Cottingham said she started the store because she has always loved reading and gardening. Bringing these two interests together seemed like a natural way to create something special for the community.
Inside, visitors can browse fiction, nonfiction and children’s books, plus a special garden room with books about gardening. Outside, customers are welcome to walk through the garden and buy plants for their own yards. Along with regular books, Arboreadum also offers audiobooks. Cottingham said she likes to listen to them while gardening or doing things around the house.
Even though the store just opened, Cottingham said, she is eager to learn about what people like to read and grow. She enjoys getting book suggestions from customers and finding new titles through chats with other readers. The same goes for gardening. Visitors often share their favorite plants, helpful tips and personal stories.
Cottingham hopes Arboreadum will become a lively part of the Cullman community. She plans to start book clubs, hold garden walks focused on audiobooks and create ways for readers and gardeners to meet each other.
