CULLMAN, Ala. – The City of Cullman Tree Commission met Tuesday, June 16, in the Administration Conference Room at city hall. The meeting was held in the conference room rather than the city hall auditorium because the auditorium was being used as a polling location for the Primary Runoff Election.
During the city arborist’s report, Shane Bivins updated the Commission on tree-related work completed following recent storms, including the removal of several fallen trees that had blocked roadways. The Commission also discussed the removal of approximately 40 trees at Heritage Park as part of a parking lot expansion project and plans for replanting trees in the area.
The Commission heard from a resident regarding concerns about a dying pecan tree that may be located within the city’s right-of-way. Bivins said he would investigate the matter and determine whether the tree falls under city jurisdiction.
Members also discussed plans for the annual Festival of Trees, a community holiday event held at the Cullman Wellness & Aquatic Center. The Festival features Christmas trees decorated by local schools and sponsored by various organizations, businesses and community groups. Tentative dates for the 2026 event were reviewed, and additional discussions were held regarding tree donations, storage and event promotion.
In other business, Chairman Barry Slatton reported that Commission member Rob Werner has completed a tree species guide containing photographs and information on approved tree species for planting within the city. The guide is expected to be made available online as a public resource.
The Commission also received updates on the new Agriplex facility and greenhouse at Sportsman Lake Park, discussed the status of recently planted Pistache trees and heard a brief report on a potential grant opportunity being explored through another tree commission.
The next meeting of the City of Cullman Tree Commission will be Tuesday, Aug. 18, at 10 a.m. in the city hall auditorium. All meetings of the Tree Commission are open to the public.
