CULLMAN, Ala. –  It’s a familiar sight up and down U.S. Highway 31 through the center of Cullman around this time of year: American flags flying in the breeze, planted proudly from south Cullman all the way to Vinemont. In all, there are more than 300 flags out for Memorial Day, thanks to Cullman Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2214.

Cullman VFW Commander Brian Monk said the flags represent the men and women who fought for our freedom and this great nation that we live in today. This year, there are also small white crosses bearing the names of Cullman County servicemembers who died in military service. The crosses are normally placed on the lawn near Ed White Jewelers; however, this year, the VFW placed them with the flags.

“Most didn’t make it back home and those flags and crosses are a remembrance of their sacrifice that was made by them for us,” Monk said. “We were putting the crosses out at Ed White’s, but due to all the political signs we thought it would be awesome to put them with the flags this year. I believe they make a bigger statement and also show patriotism and love, with the flag behind them, that those men and women that gave their lives stood for.”

Monk added, “A very special thanks to Van Hutchinson and Rick Leigeber!”

Cullman Police Chief Joey Duncan said the flags are a reminder that Memorial Day is more than a holiday; it’s a time to remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

“Their service and sacrifice will never be forgotten here in Cullman,” Duncan said. “It also speaks to the kind of community we live in, one that honors those who served, remembers those we lost and never forgets the price of freedom.”

Cullman County Sheriff Matt Gentry said the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office gives thanks to the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice so we have the freedoms that we enjoy today

“Freedom is never free,” Gentry said. “This Memorial Day, we honor the brave men and women who gave everything so future generations could live in liberty and freedom. During this Memorial Day take a moment and say a prayer for the families whose loved ones paid the ultimate sacrifice.”

Cullman County Sheriff-Elect Chad Whaley said with this year being America’s semiquincentennial, Memorial Day carries an even deeper meaning.

“It is a reminder that our freedom was secured through the ultimate sacrifice of so many brave men and women,” Whaley said. “The sacrifices made by those service members and their families should never be forgotten.

“As we gather with family and friends this Memorial Day, may we also take time to honor and remember those who gave everything for our country. I hope everyone has a safe and wonderful Memorial Day — but never forget the cost of our freedom.”
