CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman High School Theatre will present “Les Misérables: School Edition” Monday-Tuesday, April 20-21, and Thursday-Saturday, April 23-25, at 7 p.m., along with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, April 25, at the Cullman High School auditorium. The production is directed by Wayne Cook and Sarah Jane Skinner.

“Cullman High School Theatre is so excited to be presenting ‘Les Miserable’ this spring,” said Cook. “More than three decades after it first appeared on Broadway, ‘Les Misérables’ remains one of the world’s most beloved and powerful musicals.”

Based on Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel, “Les Misérables” tells a story of justice, redemption and sacrifice set in 19th-century France. The production is widely known for its popular and powerful music, featuring songs such as “I Dreamed a Dream,” “On My Own,” “Bring Him Home” and “Do You Hear the People Sing?”

Students at Cullman High School have been preparing for the production since January, contributing not only as performers, but also behind the scenes. The show features nearly 100 students working together on various aspects of the production, including set design and construction, as well as hand-painted backdrops.

“The music is spectacular, the costumes are exquisite and the sets are fabulous,” Cook said.

He added that while the production stays true to the story, it does include some mature content and may not be suitable for all ages, something parents may want to consider when deciding whether to bring younger children.

With Cullman High School’s theater program continuing to build a strong reputation, earning Best in Show at the State Trumbauer Festival four times in the past decade and receiving recognition at both the International Thespian Festival and the Southeastern Theatre Conference, Cook said he hopes the community will come out and support all of their efforts.

“We hope people will come see this production in Cullman,” Cook said. “It is a classic and is cherished by many who have followed the production for years. I believe people will not be disappointed.”
